Need assistance with crashes. I kinda know what are the issues.

Hi, thank you for dropping by.

As you could see on the title, I have been having a lot of CTD's with my Fallout 4 and I might know the reason why. I used LOOT to sort my load order to avoid more crashes but it tells me that there are a bunch of issue with the main plugins of the game (the DLC's), check the first image attached.

I have a lot of mods installed, like 140 plugins activated and I have used FO4Edit to solve the ITM's and the Deleted References using the guide provided by the TES5Edit website but the instructions to solve the deleted NavMeshes are very confusing to me, especially the part that says to look the affected area with the deleted navmesh in the GECK because I don't know exactly which area is being affected, and other sites on the web don't provide too much of assitance. According to FO4Edit, the cell affected with the deleted NavMeshes is the Commonwealth.

The second image is what the FO4Edit tells me when it finishes to "Undelete and Disable the References"

The crashes happen when theres a fight, don't know much more, I only hear gunshots and then the CTD happens.

You should simply just clean those files and ignore the weird undeletet navmesh warning, they will show up as clean next time you launch. Clean them one at a time in the order tesedit lines them up.

And this is not necessarily the root of your evil.

When you use 140+ mods you should probably also use wrye bash to figure out if your updates and patches are in the correct order to avoid hidden conflicts, and to sort.

1. First> clean your files.

2. Besides Loot and tesedit you will need wrye bash. (wrye will ask you to move your fallout files away from the root drive/files, you should probably do that, i haven't tested if it works if you don't.)

3. Launch loot>sort>close.

4. Launch wrye>look for red and yellow files>move them around until they turn green.

5. For those plugins that will not turn green no matter where you place them or their neighboring plugins, you will need to open up tesedit with only that file and its masters, just choose whatever file show up as red in wrye and tesedit will find the master for you>rightclik>Sort masters> save/close.

6. At this point you should run tesedit on all your files, that will tell you if anything is obviously misplaced or have glaring critical issues, and also tell you what to do about them.

7. Rinse and repeat until everything works.

8. (optional) Let you gut feeling do the last sorting in the nexus mod manager.

Disclaimer. You are probably better off using the beginners guide placed in this section, as i might have missed a detail or two.

It is actually not that complicated as most of these programs will tell you exactly what and when to do it. But if you only use, let's say loot, you are kind of missing out on 2/3 of the complete solution.

I have tried many tools and managers, and i have yet to find anything that works as good as the combination of Loot>wrye>tesedit>Nmm.

Hello Arneercool

I followed your advise and went to check the guide you mentioned. Used Wrye Bash to better sort the load order and FO4Edit to change some orange boxes to green boxes from most of the mods using the "appendix 1 method" suggested in the guide.

Still, I loaded my latest save file from right outside Goodneighbor and my game CTD after I encountered some Raider shooting at a Vertibird just a few block away from I spawned. And I left my load order all in green, except for a single ESP of an armor mod that I couldn't fix.

Check these photos, the first is a message box that appeared as soon as Wrye Bash opens and the other is how my load order looks in Wrye Bash, I looked at the "Beginners" guide and it doesn't reference any name being red as a bad thing.

Just gonna chime in here, if it's detecting an issue with your dlc, perhaps a DLC file is corrupt or missing? Might want to try to verify the cache.

Are you using any weapon mods that may have a ref id that is messed up and is causing the game to crash in fights when enemies try to use it?

It would be nice to know your mod list and order, as we might be able to see if there are weapon/combat related mods that conflict without merged patches.

Hello jdkzombie

I have attached my current load order in a TXT file, there you can check it. I have a few weapon mods, but no mods that alter gameplay mechanics. Most of my mods are mods that add things to the settlement building system like OCDecorator or Homemaker.

In case the plugin name are hard to read or interpret, the weapon mods activated are:

-"Wasteland Melody's Chinese Assault Rifle" - Standalone version

-"Remington 870 Pump Action Shotgun"

-"DKS-501 Sniper Rifle" - Standalone version

-"9mm Pistol (Browning Hi-Power) Redux"

-"10mm SMG"

I have been having these crashes in combat for a while, in several characters. I started my latest character with way fewer mods and I was playing happily, until these crashes started after 72+ hours of gameplay. I could avoid these crashes when I saved and exited the game before it could crash, entered the next day and no crashes until 16~ hours of gameplay.

I have another mod that spawns weapons and ammunition from the DLC's to the commonwealth enemies, like Raiders wielding the Handmade Rifle or the Harpoon.

I think I found what's making me CTD. Every time (At least this playthrough) that I CTD is when I'm nearby a place where there are Supermutants.

-The first CTD was outside Hancock's Warehouse, near the scrapyard overrun by Supermutants, south of Boston.

-The second time was out and in Fort Strong, had to use the "kill all" command to kill all Supermutants and don't CTD.

-The third time was in Malden, exiting the high school with the Vault, had to wait for an hour, don't know why but it worked.

-This four and recent time was outside of Goodneighbor (There are plenty of Supermutans in Boston), had to run to Pickman Gallery (I went there already and I'm in Survival, so everything is dead), when I exited everything was fine so I headed to Trinity Tower and I'm currently CTD inside the first cell.

Then you need to figure out what mod is super mutant related or is somehow related. It could be anything from animations not firing off properly like mutants trying to use guns they are not animated to use, to a levellist conflict, even interactions with other stuff.

But first and foremost, you should familiarize yourself even more with the loot>wrye>tesedit mentioned in the beginners guide, it will really help you in future playthroughs, and can on some occasions be as fun as playing the game itself. Like a big digital jenga game or house of cards. And you really , Really NEED to have a closer look on those red masterfiles and make them green somehow. Maybe a fresh install, or at least a steam validation, because they should not be red. No.

I feel like you are on the right track, so keep poking around.

Also, looking at your load list, you need to move the Unofficial Fallout 4 patch up to after Nuka World. Also, make sure you have the right UF4 patch for your game, if you have all the DLC, get the all dlc patch, otherwise if you are missing even just one, you need the old non dlc patch he has on his files page.

Keep in mind that Supermutants can only use certain weapon types because of lacking animations, as in they cant use a SMG because there were never mutant smg animations made. They also use particular armor pieces, so it may not even be something to do with the mtuies themselves, but perhaps gear that they are supposed to have, or have on them that is referenced wrong and causing the game to wonk out and crash.

Other than reading over your list, and looking up a few mods that I don't recognize, I don't see anything out of place other than concealed armors esm and esp being in different places in the load order, and the placement of the UF4 patch.

Have you installed LOOT and ran your load order through it to see if there are any known conflicts? Fallout4Edit? or FO4Edit, to see if you can apply filter for cleaning to remove identical to master records and make a merged patch to help resolve conflicting cells/mods?

Hello jdkzombie

Sorry for the delayed reply, yes I have installed LOOT and I pretty much run it every now and then to see if there are any issue. I also have used FO4Edit to solve any ITM and Deleted References for any plugin, but I still have some Deleted Navmeshes I have been able to fix due to the lack of guide in the web.

I will try to install a mod that will grant the supermutants more animations for more weapons, it could solve some or all the CTD's just have to search it from my tracking list.
