Best settlement location?

If you like roleplaying and believe rads will harm ur sole survivor's mental health your main base should be vault 88 or the mechanist lair or back at vault 111 (using mods)

if you're just looking for for a great view and vast "clean" land for u build at I'd say nordhagen beach , nuka world red rocket or , abernathy farm or spectacle Island

PS , spectacle Island is a disaster when it comes to supply lines management and settlement defense (enemies could spawn right inside ur house and even steal some of ur items)

If you want simple things and don't like extravagant and huge structures you could repair croup manor or red rocket gas station (the one at concord)

Two mods should take care of the problems ith Spectacle Island. First install one of the mods to build a bridge, that should take care of the supply lines, then install the Settlement Attacks Beyond mod, which stops them spawning inside the settlement.

One of my favourite settlements (sfter Sanctuary) is Starlight Drive-in, it's big and flat with a water source in the middle. If you use the Scrap Everything mod, you can scrap the existing buildings and start from scratch.

The Castle for me. I tinkered about with upgrading it in my last playthrough and in my current one I have poured everything into it, fully carpeted throughout, every room decorated, loads of jobs for settlers and I have extended it out to the extent of the build limit. And I haven't even gone to see Virgil yet.

It's even bigger now than when I took this shot a couple of weeks ago.

I installed one of the mods to build a bridge to Spectacle Island and it had the effect of loading nearly all my workbenches with 165000 of various materials and if I tried to remove the stuff from the workbench the game would CTD. I use Rebuilt Spectacle Island which just repairs the hotel and it has no side effects.

a great question.

there are a few locales which are fun settlements;

Memory Den Virtual Holodeck <- that's the only place that has pristine pre-war stuff...

Red Rocket Spa and Resort, North Concord. <- for obvious "Maxson in the NCR" reasons.

Starlight City or Greygarden Factory and Tenements are also right up there.

Hangman's Alley - 3 stories of 'board walk',

its all one giant 19 levels of supermarket/bazaar really.

The institute or University Point Restored, those are nice.

The UnderBoston "The Squat", it's near old north church and the nearby metro station.

that has such a resemblance to the underoldnewyork in Futurama.

if the TARDIS mod counts as a settlement, then that one, which is everywhere.

(it's a mobile any door to any where -> new lands reference.) it's very similar to the Memory Den Virtual Holodeck,

though, you can access that practically anywhere.

RuadHan2300's teleportal-door gun is very awesome in a similar way also.

if we're talking unmodified FO4,

then, Boston Airport or Cambridge BoS outpost are 'best' hehe.

For me it would be Starlight: the location is perfect, in the middle of the map when you're a mid/low-level player, artillery can reach many important targets, including Thicket Excavation (raiding this location is a great idea for acquiring many weapons, armor and mirelurk meat). Quite a large area, very flat and after scrapping radioactive barrels you get a large source of purified water. You can use existing structures, like rooms inside the movie screen and the diner - by using either console commands or some mods you can make vendors sell their stuff from behind the counter,

Hangman's Alley is very useful due to proximity to Diamond City, but it's too small to make it a central settlement

The Castle is the worst one, because of it's size and shape of the building, walls of the rooms don't have right angle, Hard to find room for more than 20 men, I would rather pulled it down and built a rectangular version. I always prefer to surround my settlements with lon, as tall as possible, multifloored buidlings rather than fences.

I have the mod which unlocks the buildings at Hangman's Alley and you get a vast amount of space. Something like 4 floors each.

@gadget45

re post #8

well said!

indeed, that is a good mod for Hangman's Alley,

which is one of the best thematic locales IMHO.

you can cram a lot of stuff high-density there,

and with interior-to-exterior doorportals now more a thing,

you can connect those 'new-lands' interior apartments

all into one massive structure eh.

from ground floor, up 3 stories is a layered boardwalk (from the "Piers and more nautical nonsense" parts pack)

so, it is as if the whole markets and city-scrap-scraper, is on stilts...

and when you connect the little power-shack/garage,

into an elevator...

you can connect Hangman's Alley to the Good Institute,

so there's that too.

each of those newlands adjacent doors,

and basement living,

can add something as 20+ interior cells.

so, it can get to be quite a large settlement.

some people made it all topside-institute or pre-war,

though that's not how I envisaged that locale to be,

I went with the crowd that went more University Point style/Minutemen scrap-scrapers.

Conquest, Portable Workshop (don't use near a Conquest settlement!), Sim Settlements, Scrap Everything, Snappy Builds, Homemaker, Cat Deco, Better Settlers with KS Hairdos, vanilla settlements expanded, Settlement attacks beyond, no build limit, BYOP, OC Decor, more turret variety, and about ten other mods allow me to build big expansive settlements ANYWHERE I want! I have built on top of the tallest buildings downtown. I have built in vaults, I have built in small apartments, I even scrapped everything on the USS Constitution! Right now I am building settlements all over downtown to set up some major battles. Can my crappy pc handle it? Probably not. But I have so much fun rebuilding everything in the game. Just be careful what you scrap, cause some times it will cause problems.

You could conceivably turn Diamond City into a settlement with the Conquest mod or another mod and have Home Plate connected to your supply line through another mod. Haven't tried that one though. Oh, and I don't even use supply lines anymore. I modified a ring to let me carry 50000 pounds of gear. I found it annoying to have to worry about a weight limit when there is so much junk to scrap or pick up. :D
