zombologist
Well, once again it seems I have come to you seeking help with a matter that is vexing me so. I was installing mods like I usually do on a night like this when I came across a problem where it would crash half-way through the bethesda softworks video at the very beginning, I began to test clusters of mods at a time, untill I got to the botom of the list nothing had gone wrong. when I tried installing the last few it crashed again, same way as it did before, so I took them off one by one until I found the problem file and deactivated it. Ran oblivion, everythings fine. I then activated one of the mods I took off while finding a problem file, to find that it crashed again, in the same way. I removed that and activated the next one down, same still. continue that for five more esp files and its still not working, but then I decide to take another unrelated mod off and upload one of the unworking files, to my suprise it works, but if I then tried to activate some other esp it would crash again  By this stage I'm all like :wallbash: So does oblivion have a mod amount you have to live by or is there something completely different going on, if so, how do I fix it? I have the direct2drive version if that helps... :thanks: for any help I get.
herosinger
You can only have 255 files active, including the Oblivion.esm.
coraf_89
Some of the mods have the same worldspace in Oblivion. It can be that problem you have. You could change the worldspace of the mod that causes the problem.

Usually, startup CTDs are caused by a missing .esm file.
zombologist
You mean at any one time I can only have 255 esps active? Who the hell at Bethesda thought up that stupid rule? :verymad: Anyway to get around the limitations?

The 255 rule is central to the engines of both Oblivion and Morrowind. It applies to stats as well: more than 255 in a stat will not register.
