Game Nonresponsive on Startup

Recommended Posts

Hey there y'all, I just recently finished following the "Fear and Loathing in New Vegas" guide, including doing all the bash tag generation and creating the bashed patch. But when I start it up, the music starts playing and I'll sometimes see the first slide, but then it goes nonresponsive and doesn't do anything else. The process is still working in task manager using CPU and HDD, but it hangs on nonresponsive no matter how long I wait.

141 files in the data folder, plus an enb is more than the game engine can handle. Unused plugins are counted, so remove them.

Are you using any file that would allow you to use more than 2GB of RAM? You should.

All those "inactive" plugins need to be moved out of the game "Data" folder. The game is still loading them, and that can be causing a "missing master" error, AND they count against the plugin cap. (If LOOT is showing them, then they are present in the folder. "Ghosting" adds a ".ghost" end to the extension so LOOT and the game ignore them.) If they were "deactivated" by the "Bashed Patch", then you should have enabled "auto-ghosting" in the "Mods" Tab of Wrye Flash by right-clicking on the column header and choosing the option from the context menu BEFORE running "Mark Mergeable" and "Rebuild Patch". Please see the wiki "Bashed Patch file with Marked Mergeables" article.

Once that is done, if you are still having problems, see the 'Solutions to Starting the game problems' section in the wiki "Fallout NV Mod Conflict Troubleshooting" guide.

I'm using the 4GB patch, yes. I did the ghosting thing and rebuilt the patch, but there has been no change. It now get to the main menu background, but then it goes unresponsive again and never loads the actual menu. I also ran through the checks suggested by the "Fallout NV Mod Conflict Troubleshooting" guide, to no avail. I'm not missing any masters, and I've re-run LOOT more times than I can count.

This is the current order according to LOOT:

Edit: Oh, and here is the log from FNVEdit when I use it to check for missing masters.

Well, as it doesn't appear to be a "missing master" (which is the most common problem), please provide ALL the other information requested in the wiki "How to ask for help" article. In particular we want to know if you are installed into the default "C:\Program Files" folder tree.

As you said "I also ran through the checks suggested by the "Fallout NV Mod Conflict Troubleshooting" guide, to no avail", I presume you meant the "Checklist". Did you enable and then check the NVSE Error log as detailed in "Checklist item #4"?

If you didn't go through the other suggestions in the 'Solutions to Starting the game problems' (even if they don't seem to apply, such as "Vanilla game" problems), do let me know, as they are the other common causes.

Assuming you did try those solutions, we need to look for less common causes.

See the "Fallout: New Vegas Mod Troubleshooting" sub-forum Fallout New Vegas Beginners Guide to modding thread ("sticky" at the top) about "orange boxes" in Wrye Flash indicating mods with conflicting load order of their "master files". This can also cause "hangs" similar to "missing masters".

Shutdown all the background apps you can, to include the Steam (or other) overlay, run in "offline mode" and disable anti-virus, etc.

See the 'Issue: CTD without warning, "Out of Memory error", or stops responding after the Main Menu' solutions in the "Troubleshooting" guide.

Intel Core i5-4690K @ 3.50GHz

Geforce GTX 970, 4gb VRAM

1920x1080 monitor

10gb RAM

207GB HDD Free Space on installed drive

Desktop not Laptop

Windows 10, Up to date

Game installed to "D:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Fallout New Vegas"

Game fully updated, with all DLCs

Using Mod Organizer

Using LOOT, TES5Edit, Wyre Flash NV, and Script Extenders (NVSE and JIP LN NVSE Plugin)

4GB Patch is applied

Game worked in initial testing after installing several mods (tested when recommended by Fear and Loathing guide)

Verified Local files and tested, no difference

There was nothing in the nvse.log file, and I couldn't check the "falloutnv_error.log" because for some reason it's "too big of a file for notepad++ to open".

I tried moving things around in Wyre to get rid of orange checks, but most of them just disagreed on what order the DLC should be in (I couldn't please all of them).

Speedfan reports no problems, and when I tried running with nothing else on (no antivirus, steam offline, etc) there was also no change.

Thanks for the info. Everything looks good, so it's most likely your problem is the "orange checks"/"masters sort" mismatch problem.

The orange checks issue usually has to be resolved by using FNVEdit (xEdit/TES5Edit) with them, individually.

* Load the plugin in question into xEdit, which will automatically load the masters to that plugin as well.

* Once it has finished loading, in the left-hand pane right-click on the plugin filename and select "Sort Masters".

* Then left-click the "+" to the left of the plugin name to expand the categories, and select the "File Header".

- That category should be in bold type, indicating that has had a change to it's contents. (You probably will see other categories in bold as well. These were also changed so their records conform to the new mod indexes.)

- You should see the masters (in the right-hand pane) are now sorted to match the sequence in your load order (at least as xEdit has determined it).

* Close xEdit and save the plugin.

This plugin should now be a green checkbox in WF. You will want to copy this resorted file from the "Data" folder to the archive you use to install in the BAIN tab. (I usually create a "project" from the original downloaded file, and copy such resorted versions back into that project and "repackage to archive" for use in BAIN.)

Repeat the process for each plugin you can't otherwise get to green. Don't worry, this process works without issue for most mods. The only known issue is with "Project Nevada - Extra Options" and the solution is documented in the 'Issue: Recommended "Project Nevada" master file load order?' entry of the "Troubleshooting" guide.

The FalloutNV_Error.log probably has repeated sessions in it because it is not being closed properly due to your hang issue. Try renaming it before your next test and see if you can't get a more reasonable sized one. But the "nvse_error.log" is really the one of interest.

Well, I did the fixing of the sorting, got all the boxes to green, rebuilt the patch.. And it's still doing it. No change whatsoever.

I also cleared the FalloutNV_Error.log and ran the game one time and checked it again - over a gigabyte after a single run. I couldn't find the nvse_error.log, but the nvse.log only has:

NVSE runtime: initialize (version = 5.1.2 040020D0 01D31D0017E7E3B5)
imagebase = 00400000
fallout root = D:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Fallout New Vegas\
config path = D:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Fallout New Vegas\Data\NVSE\nvse_config.ini

Should I just give up and wipe back to vanilla and start over?

(By the way, I really appreciate your taking the time to try and help me figure this out)

You have to manually enable the NVSE_Error.log file before it will be created. That is detailed in "Checklist Item #4. The file will be created in the game root folder (Fallout New Vegas). If it isn't there, then either you are not getting to the point where NVSE is started (which the NVSE.LOG file is indicating it is), or you don't have logging enabled.

That size in the "FalloutNV_Error.log" is bad news. You have some massive problems when the game loads files. (Mine is only 250KB.) You REALLY want to examine that file and see just what is going on (look for "error", ignoring case). Try a "file splitter" or an app designed to load very large (multi-GB) files. This article discusses several options and their pros and cons. But a general web search on "windows split large text file" will turn up a number of alternatives. In your specific case, you want something that will split based upon the end of a line ("CR/LF" ASCII code combo) or by "line number". Otherwise you could find yourself right back with the same problem

It's working! I loaded up a log viewer that could view files bigger than 1GB, and I found out that 99.999999999% of that log file was the same line, over and over again:

"MASTERFILE: Unable to find form (56017185) on list form (5C00473E)."
So, I just disabled the mod ID 56 in my load order, which turned out to be Ambient Temperatures, and the game loaded up!
