madmongo
The Salton Sea isn't an island. It's a lake. It was a large dry lake bed until 1905 when they were trying to add some irrigation canals and the canal wall failed (not a broken dam, but you were pretty close so no biggie). They couldn't stop the flow of the water, so they ended up with a 35 x 15 mile lake, which is pretty big. The lake has no outflow, so water flows in and its only way out is to evaporate, leaving all of the salts and minerals behind. This means that over time, the lake has become more and more salty and choked with minerals. At first the lake was a great place for new resorts and new lakeside property, but as the salts and minerals began to build up, as well as man-made pollutants, the lake became uninhabitable. Fish died off. The lake developed a nasty smell, which combined with large numbers of dead fish, killed the resort business. Most of these resorts and fancy homes were built around the shore of the lake. There may be an island there, but I personally have never heard of it. If you want to see some abandoned Fallout-style buildings covered in salt, you can go visit the lake in real life. Do a google image search for "salton sea abandoned buildings" and you'll see what I mean. Lots of great inspiration for Fallout modders. It's a huge lake. If you kept the scale the same as FNV, the lake would take up about half of the worldspace. The tourist resorts may be gone, but the lake isn't completely abandoned. There are several small towns like Salton City around the lake. There are a few pockets of abandoned buildings. Mostly though it's just empty shoreline with a road running down each side of the lake and a railway on one side. If you want some kind of mod related to all of this you are going to need to be a bit more specific about what it is you are looking for.
