Anime people ;)

It could easily fit into the debates section, I suppose. I agree with everything Moraelin has stated so far, btw. It seems like many people are mistaking this post for something else.

Well, it has to do with what people call "anime" in mods.

...

But, ah well, it's not THAT important, and you gotta do what you gotta do. If you think it doesn't belong here or it's better off closed, so be it.

May I point out that in your topic title and entire 20+ line first post, you mention "mods" and "Skyrim" exactly... not at all.

So again, to which forum would like this moved?

@Moraelin; While I sure this is all fascinating to people interested in comparative art, it has little or nothing to do with Skyrim.

I can move it to "The Lounge", "Druid's Garden", or even "Debates" if you'd like. Otherwise, it gets locked.

I respectfully disagree with the context that this post has little or nothing to do with Skyrim. I know that is quite the forward remark by a relative newcomer, but at the very least I would petition for a move over a lock on this topic (maybe "Debates" ?).

I feel that one message that Moraelin may be trying to say (the OP would have to clarify), in an overly lengthy way, is that: "with the changes made as the Elder Scrolls games progressed to different target audiences has led to a more diverse group looking to mod Skyrim in classical ways, unknowingly."

I think we can see with some of the changes currently used in Skyrim, as examples but not limited to the removal of armor repairs, Acrobatics skills, Mysticism magic and classes, there are more generalized players in the Skyrim role playing game than were in previous Elder Scrolls. The depth of play that has been removed from Skyrim is not to my taste, as I started such role playing games not with computer games but real paper & book games like D&D, Vampire and Shadowrun to name a few. With the advent of the game changes brought in there is a larger audience available to Bethesda to sell their game to: this is a business decision, not a fan based one. I feel that most "die hard roleplayers" who play Skyrim are a smaller percentile than before, and that change is brought on by a younger audience that has Naruto, Final Fantasy XIII and Pokemon as their primary fantasy concepts.

What the younger and more diverse audience of Skyrim specifically does not realize, and thusly pointed out by Moraelin, is that their need to insert their "anime fantasy styles" into Skyrim is an infant to its predecessor: the styles of anime was a direct copy of the European styles of old. In my opinion since vanilla Skyrim concepts, along with much of the Elder Scrolls, are based on Europe and the Mediterranean area those who wish to insert "anime" into the game must realize that it is already there. It just happens to be there as its parent, and not the infant.

However, I feel that it is the more diverse target of Skyrim gamers specifically that has driven some mods to unknowingly insert the child when the parent is already there. :geek:

That's my very opinionated view of what Moraelin was trying to point out, with generous examples of course.

@anubispriest; Your entire post is exactly why this discussion belongs elsewhere. Not saying any of the points made aren't valid. Just that the entire topic is not about Skyrim, or mods. It's about art styles, nomenclature, popular perceptions, and (constructive) criticisms of all of those.

This topic really drives hard core "gamers" from both sides CrAzY. I personally sit on the fence. I like both, but not merged.

Lets just put it all back into perspective. Skyrim IS a game. OMG she said it!!! All games have pieces or parts you play with for your version of fun. How about you load the mods you like for your type of game play. Then, Change or don't d/l the ones you despise. You then can learn to mod or invest more time in your present mods and become one of the great sources for all our enjoyment. Make what you like and let us try it out. :D

100% in agreement...

I read Moraelin's thread up to Thandal's post about locking or moving and presented my opinion on why it should be moved, basically because I have an opinion that Moraelin started with the evidence without making a full statement on why it was being presented.

I admit ignorance to previous threads on the topic.

Let those enjoy what they may...

Well, in all fairness, it starts with "You know, it starts to bug me that just about any cute character is called "anime"." I thought it would be obvious that the characters called anime on a Skyrim board would be, you know, Skyrim characters :P

Granted though, I could have made it a lot clearer.

None of those images were "anime" ... as a matter of fact I see absolutely zero anime "in" any of those paintings ...

Anime is distinct ... and yes, anime "is art", anything that is drawn is art ... maybe not your type of art but art nonetheless ... anime is a "style"

whether it takes 1 minute or 1 day to capture ... it might be minimal in it's scope but that minimalism is a genre in itself.

Take fashion for instance ... sometimes the creator uses perhaps only one or two colors ... for instance black and white, and then they

use a simplistic cut ... the fashion world goes crazy.

That is art ... simplistic and clean and pure lines of color ... art.

As they say, less is more.

Anime is art and it is distinct.

Again, it wasn't about painting style per se, but about the kind of faces, as in face shape and structure, that people (wrongly) call anime if you post a screenshot or a mod. None of those are really drawn at all, as in actually have lines inked around them, nor patches of simple colours, since the game engine would do its shading and applying shadows anyway. But just about any character that is even remotely cute or pretty is just about guaranteed to be called "anime" sooner or later.

In fact, just about everything short of a manly male face has been called "anime" around here. Some people throw that adjective around like it's their last chance.

(Mind you, I could pick on the male faces too, since we had people painting bishounen over here long before we even knew that Japan exists :P )

My point is that, in fact, even mods which do try to add anime faces, e.g., the She race for New Vegas, are in fact more European than what the Europeans have been painting all across the middle ages, renaissance and even baroque era. So, really, I don't know why people pick on every other face as being "anime".
