The sandwich thread

This thread is to talk about sandwiches of all types: hot, cold, open faced, and even things that may or may not actually be sandwiches (see the sandwich alignment chart for more details). Share your recipes, stories, or general opinions about mans most simple and wonderful delicacy.

The other day, I decided to change things up a notch, and stopped using regular kraft singles (is that even cheese) on my grilled cheeses, and decided to use some swiss cheese slices instead...and oh my goodness, it was profoundly delicious, especially with some tomato soup on the side.

Ditching the kraft singles was indeed a prudent idea... they taste like plastic.

Blue cheese is pretty good on sandwiches and burgers.

You know, I just decided to look up what exactly kraft cheese singles are. Apparently the actual cheese content is under 51%, so by law they must call it a "pasteurized cheese product".

There's a place down town that has a burger with bleu cheese, hot sauce, and some other stuff. I generally don't like bleu cheese, but that burger was really good.

It has its uses imo. It's near the bottom of my list for cheese snacking, but I can't imagine a grilled cheese sandwich made with anything else.

I forget if it was on this site or another, but someone started a thread on, "There are two kinds of people in the world", and the one that made me laugh the hardest was, "Those who like American cheese, and those who don't". Truer words have never been spoken imo. :)

I'll kinda in the middle with american cheese, I just don't find it has any depth to the flavor, so in many instances there is another cheese that can do it's job better. I'd say American cheese probably goes best on grilled cheeses, hot dogs, hamburgers, or some other kind of hot sandwich.

In other news, I've been wanting to try egg salad sandwiches, but I have no clue what to put on it. The egg salad kinda seems lonely on the bread, I tired adding salt and pepper to it, but it still feels like it's missing something that would make it truly special. Does anyone have any ideas?

Try a slice of American cheese on it. :D

When cold salads are made right they don't require a lot of toppings. For egg (or chicken, tuna etc) salad, anything more than a few pieces of crisp lettuce and maybe a tomato slice is gilding the lily imo. If your egg salad lacks flavor, try a small amount of garlic powder with the salt & pepper. It usually works for chicken salad too. But be careful to not overdo it.

I wish we here in America had a better cheese industry than what we do. Or maybe we do have at thriving cheese industry and I just live in a shitty non-cheesy part of America. About the only cheeses to be had around here is pasteurized Cheddar types. The cheesiest we get around here is our local wally-world which has a few different varities in small packages of like 2 to 5 ounces. Decent enough for a nibble but not really snacking size. Or am I just a cheese glutton? We also have the more common pound or two pound but that's mostly limited to cheddar and mozarella varities.
