I's think that depends on who you are. I usually stick with the Minutemen and the RR. BOS is a no go for me. I can't stand them. And I never really liked Power Armor, even though I admit that it is well done in FO4. Still - I DO lack the distinguishing factors between the different factions, that were so very apparent in FO3 and New Vegas. The FO4 soup - to me at least- lacks, not only salt, but most other spices too

My personal favorite is the Institute. As leader of the Institute you can truly make a difference in the Commonwealth. Piper's article Fear the Future? after the Institute ending is probably the perfect way to describe how I feel about the potential of that faction. I do also like the Minutemen - and over time they likely would pair nicely with the Institute.

I don't feel that the Brotherhood of Steel is very interested in staying in the Commonwealth after they destroy the Institute. The Railroad has no genuine interest in helping the people of the Commonwealth, Desdemona herself tells you that. The Minutemen can't do it all by themselves - but if they had to they wouldn't be too bad.

Commonwealth Minutemen by a country mile. People in Diamond City love ya, and they'll run up and give you presents. DC guards will comment how they wanna join the Minutemen one day. Your Minutemen boys and girls will eat at Power Noodles and casually read Piper's paper by the stores, and everybody will love them for it. You are in tight with both the Brotherhood and Railroad, and have access to their bases and merchants. BOS patrols drop by to say hi, and RR assets like Amari continue to be friends.

In fact, the Minutemen ending is almost too perfect with very few drawbacks, some players like to have drawbacks and tradeoffs, instead of being a complete everyfaction/everyguild god like in Skyrim.

Pair the Railroad with the Minutemen. That's the best ending given to us since the other 2 factions are inherently "evil."

Ultimately, the RR isn't entirely opposed to helping the people of the commonwealth; Deacon is willing to, and once the Synths are "free" the RR has lost its purpose - you'll have an entire clandestine organization full of people that once dedicated their lives to aiding synths now without purpose. Its not too far-fetched to see the general of the minutemen using the successor of the RR as its more undercover wing.

Ontop of that, siding with literally anyone else than the RR is to stand by and be "okay" with genocide/slavery. The brotherhood would murder all synths and ghouls and the minutemen on their own are a reflection of the Commonwealth which has a strong prejudice against Synths.

Problem with the institute is that there is no way the members of it would ever be cool with you just liberating the synths, ending the synth program, or suddenly redirecting the Institute towards assisting the Commonwealth - you would lose all legitimacy as director amongst the Institutes board.

I may be wrong but I just can't see the Minutemen being canon.

They just seem like to much of a fall back faction Imo. I could be wrong though.

Well BoS is temporary, they are only in the Commonwealth for their own goals and leave it as soon as they plundered it and destroyed the Institute leaving the people of the Commonwealth in even bigger ruins. The way they go at things it will surely at one point clash with the minutemen as BoS will start rolling into settlements rooting out synths and killing indiscriminatly.

Railroad, They are idealists, they are just as hardcore as BoS in getting their goals done no matter what the cost. Once the Synths are freed they will have to find some other cause to fight for, propably freeing toasters and robots as a certain scientists tells you. It's simply the way hardcore idealists are hardwired. They need a purpose and will find some other goal once the synths are free and pursue that relentlessly.

Minutemen, They are there for the people, they are the people struggling everyday and are the best hope for the commonwealth IF and only IF you can turn around the Institute. Without the Institute, once you are gone, you will probably end up being Becket 2, the last real general of the Minutemen that kept them together before more treason and another Quincy massacre that will be the end of the minutemen.

The Institute, the problem with the Institute is that it just ends, your director and we have no way in game to realy change anything, but if you think beyond, you are very probably able to change the Institute and start helping the people of the Commonwealth together with your function as General of the Minutemen. The institute is already in a position where they have to start relying on the Commonwealth more and more despite their synth manpower. The institute is unable to sustain itself and it started to show. They need people from above, even a scientist educated by books. You could start small by making Coursers join the Minutemen to help the people of the commonwealth. It would pose no risk to the Institute because they can recall them whenever they want if the commonwealth does turn on them, but it's a good start. Once people start to realize it is synths and humans together keeping them safe and helping them, the people will be willing to provide the Institute with the materials that the institute now rellies on getting by force. Once the killing by synths stops, synths start helping cleaning things up, build and scientists start helping with crops and food is no issue anymore, you are well on your way to trully start rebuilding. Rebuilding takes 2 factions that have roots in the Commonwealth and a common interest. Both BoS and RR lack that common ground with the rest of the Commonwealth.

SO imho there is no 1 good faction there are 2 you need to get to work together for the better of the Commonwealth and BoS and RR have no place there, they have to go.

You are wrong. It's in the game - thus it is canon. More importantly, they're a primary faction with an ending (that lines up nearly exactly with two of the other factions). You really can't get more canon then that. They are the "fall back" faction though. In the bizarre chance you upset all of the others - there will always be the Minutemen.

Totally agree. The Institute could still use Synths - but this time for something more ambitious and positive. The Institute and the Commonwealth need one another much more than they realize. The Institute could use Synths as their eyes and ears above ground. They could be doctors, traders, and generally helpful. Coursers could help provide protection, as well as Gen 1 and Gen 2 Synths.
In time the mutant and problem could decrease. All of this would be open though. People would need to know that it's the Institute that is helping them. Some aspects of the Vanilla game do show that the Institute is much more interested in being more involved above ground - and making their presence known to the people (hence their flag in Diamond City, the largest human settlement and their constant Synth patrols).
Crops and water supplies could increase. The Commonwealth could truly be a good place. While the game itself offers no post-game roleplaying for the Institute (typical of Bethesda) it is obvious the "future" of that faction is open ended. Piper even theorizes in her newspaper that the future may not be as grim as people think with the Institute watching over everyone.
