Experiencing slowness in game after extended play times

Hey All,

Powerhouse of a computer, have about ~100 mods running. Everything you would expect (apologies for being vague, can clarify if helpful).

In any case, after playing for extended periods of time (3-4 hours), game experiences significant slowdowns.

I'm under the impression that this might be memory leak related? Has anyone encountered and solved? Thanks so much.

This is best solved by running a performance monitoring program while playing. Something like MSI Afterburner or CAM. Watch memory usage as you play, if it keeps climbing and your FPS keeps declining then that's your problem. As for what may be causing it - I'm not really sure. Also, you may want to list what mods you have (a load order), what your system specs are, what OS you're using, and other potentially pertinent information that you can think of in regards to what could be affecting performance or your game.

Please see the 'Solutions to Performance problems' and 'Solutions to "Crash To Desktop" (CTD) problems' sections in the wiki "Fallout NV Mod Conflict Troubleshooting" guide for known solutions.

Otherwise, as suggested by DaddyDirection, please provide ALL the information requested in the wiki "How to ask for help" article. A "monster machine" doesn't really help with a seven year old 32-bit game designed for Win Vista. It's simply not capable of making use of all your hardware capabilities, and Win10 imposes it's own limitations.

You need to be using a "merged patch" file. Please see the 'Towards Game Stability', 'Third Rule: The Rule of One', 'Smaller Plugin Cap', and 'Merge Patch file' sections of the wiki "FNV General Mod Use Advice" article.

Move any "inactive" plugins out of the game "Data" folder. They count against the "plugin cap" because they get loaded by the game engine if found, and can cause "Missing Master" problems as well as issues such as you are seeing. If you can't get down to roughly 130 by moving inactives out, try to prioritize and uninstall (on a temporary "test" basis) the less important plugins until you do so. If that does resolve your problems, then see the wiki "Merged Plugin Guidelines for Personal Use" article on how to merge plugins (which is not the same as a "merge patch" file) to get your active count down while still keeping the mods.

I notice you are using a nVidia 1080 under Win10. Be aware that there is a builtin limitation to the DirectX9 driver included for Win10 that limits VRAM use to 4GB, at least until the "Fall Creators Update" due on the 17th which is supposed to fix it. You might want to wait a few days until the update comes down before making a bunch of drastic changes.

In addition, you have a large hi-rez display (3840x2160). Larger screen size means more pixels that have to be displayed (aka "display resolution"), so it magnifies the impact of hi-rez texture images on the use of VRAM. Consequently, if you have lots of hi-rez textures installed (which won't show up in your load order), they could be having an impact. The same for other "beautification" mods.

Not saying they are the cause of your problems, but "Vurt's WFO.esp" and "Nevada Skies" have a broad, overall impact on the worldspace. Combined with other textures they contribute to the demand on your video system.

Again, as pointed out in my original reply: old game and design limitations cannot be overcome by newer, better hardware. You have to live within the limitations.

The game does seem to leak memory, so all of the things Dubious mentioned will help, bu they probably won't completely fix the problem. The 4 GB patch will help a bit as well.

The game's texture caching system seems to be one of the main causes. Using lower texture settings (under video options while the game is running) helps a bit as well, at a cost of making the screen look a bit less pretty. Using higher resolution texture mods will make the problem worse.

I've personally combined/squished things down to about 60 or 70 mods, and after some trial and error I've arrived at a stable combination of texture quality vs. appearance quality that looks about as good as I can get it while avoiding crashes and slowdowns after a few hours.

It's annoying, but you can just save and restart the game if you notice things getting sluggish.
