There is no right or wrong, it depends on your point of view.

Personally I sided with the Imperials, but thats only because Ulfric discriminated against the other races. Where I live (Singapore), we live in racial harmony. Otherwise, I would have sided with Ulfric since I REALLY dislike the thalmor.

Plus I'd rather serve under Elisif ^////^

They are both right and they are both wrong, it's one of those grey areas designed to fuel forum debates. The die-hard stormcloak and imperial fan-boys should be by shortly to flame and troll each other on the subject (unless of course they are tired out from all the other threads on the subject.)

It all comes down to perspective, really. Ulfric, if we ignore the possibly biased (if sensible) idea that he only hungers for power as the High King, supposedly has his heart in the right place, looking to liberate the Nords (only the Nords however, it can't be argued that he cares little for other races living in the land) and letting them live in freedom in the sacred land of Skyrim. The Empire, if we try to be rational and not look at them as the voluntary bootlickers of the Thalmor, are simply looking to unite all the nations and races, since together they would be strong and could live in peace like during the Third Era. Both sides have their rights and wrongs. With that said... (only read below if you've finished the "Diplomatic Immunity" quest).

The Thalmor want the civil war in Skyrim to go on for as long as possible, so that they can weaken both Skyrim and the Empire's forces and take it all over in due time. The High Elves are incredibly long-lived, and so they plan hundreds of years ahead, and all they wish is to seize power over Tamriel by force, so to them weakening both the Nords and the Imperials would be beneficial, which is why the Civil War in Skyrim needs to end as soon as possible. Not only does it need to stop, but if there's going to be any hope of stopping the Thalmor in the future, the warriors of Skyrim are going to have to be on the Empire's side. The Empire with backup from the Nords may well be able to beat the Thalmor back, but the Thalmor will almost certainly crush both the Empire and Skyrim if the two don't stand united. Add to this that a lot of people, Nords and otherwise, living in Skyrim don't trust Ulfric and wouldn't want him as High King, and I hope you can see why the Empire needs to be victorious.

They use Disney-style "morality" in this game, so:

Imperials = those silly heroes who mess up half the time

Stormcloaks = villains who like giving pretty speeches but don't actually help anyone

As for right and wrong. If you fight for one side or the other then YOU are in the wrong. Pretty simple, huh?

tl;dr version of the below: There is no right answer. You can find evidence to support either side in the rebellion.

There is no right side. This is actually one of the only gray areas in the game. It's great. Only The Witcher games do a better job of presenting gray areas. Each side can be rationalized to be good or bad, and each side can be rationalized as to be the one that needs to win the war. There is no correct answer despite what anyone tells you. It seems the only right answer as far as sides go in the rebellion is that one side needs to win now to not be so weakened the Thalmor walk right over them. You could even make an argument for the Thalmor if you really wanted to. This is not a civil war any more than the American Revolution was a civil war. Skyrim is not Cyrodiil. They were both just part of the Empire that had its seat in Cyrodiil during the Third Age. At this point in history Skyrim is the last province left in the Empire. Hammerfell was the most recent province to be removed from the Empire as part of the White Gold Concordant. This is why you find some rather upset Redguards who proclaim the resistance is not over. They're still fighting the Thalmor while you're having your adventure in Skyrim. The other races all have stories as to why they're not part of the Empire anymore. Even in the Empire itself the current Emperor is not a Septim. He's a Mede. Titus Mede I took the Imperial Seat by force in the chaotic aftermath of the events in Oblivion. Two hundred years have passed since the events in Oblivion. Nothing is the same as it was. The events unfolding in Skyrim have no right answer. You're in the middle of it. Only history will tell if the choices made are correct.
