Load Saved Game - Missions & Mods RESETTING: Deleting mod content, re-installing mods, starting completed quests from scratch

All - I've got a bit of a head scratcher and searching aorund on the internet I'm seeing a few people having the same problem, but no fix. Hoping you can help, otherwise my game is bjorked.

On a PC, with mods. Latest patches, latest version of the game, FSE etc etc. Everything has been fine and dandy up until this last weekend.

---

When I loaded my saved game, I was suddenly flooded with mods installing themselves seemingly for the first time (pop-up messages, notifications etc) *AND* quest alerts popping up for quests I've already done ("listen to such-and-such radio" for example). Dozens of them. It is like the game forgot that I had these installed/completed already. It had DELETED everything to do with any mod: sim settlements, rifles, armor, Heather (companion); all gone. My position in the world was intact, but basically anything to do with mods was deleted, and then the mods reinstalled ... so they were present ... and any quest like "investigate XYZ" or "listen to XYZ radio" was reset.

I went back about 6 saves before this stopped happening; about six saves ago (2-4 hrs of gameplay, so nothing major) this behavior stopped and I thought I was good. I carried on playing, got close to catching up with where I was previously and left it.

Came back yesterday, latest save, AND IT'S DOING IT AGAIN; deleting all mod content, resetting quests, behaving like the mods have just been installed for the first time.

  • I have tried reducing my .esp count.
  • I have removed extraneous files from my data folder to get my count down (I read somewhere this is related to the issue?)
  • I tried using NMM to "reset archive invalidation" (no idea what that actually does)
  • Used LOOT to verify no conflicts and to get the load order sorted
  • Verified that my mod list .txt file wasn't read-only. Then I tried read-only; basically toggling it.

Nothing is helping; it's like my save is loading before my mods; it deletes everything from the game that came form a mod, it's resetting DLC notifications related to the radio (Nuka World, Mechanist, etc), and THEN it reloads the mods ... the mods are coming in a way last, but at that point everything is deleted and reset.Any ideas what's happening?

I'm having exactly the same problem. Thought it was some of my newly installed mods which caused to problem, but it didn't help uninstalling them. It's so frustrating, but I have no idea what is causing his problem. I will try to start a brand new game and see if the problem stays or not.

yeah, from what I've seen out there, it happens, but no one has really tracked down why and it's not common.

I've been loathed to start again incase it was a "number of mods" issue and just occurred again at some distant point. I have no idea why the game would forget your mods, load the game, uninstall all your stuff, then re-enable the mods *AND* DLC quests. I figured that this must be some form of hardware (load time?) or configuration issue, so I've been reluctant to just start again until I understood why this is happening.

I googled it and found out that some players have had the same problem in Skyrim. They fixed it by move the save files to a different folder, disable the mods, then start a new game, install the mods again and save the game. Then they move the old "corrupt" files back to the save game folder and that would fix the problem. Unfortunally it didn't for me in F4 though.

i had something similar to this happen (sort of)

basically, i was playing fallout, and as i transitioned cells, the game just froze, i then fire it up again, and all mods no longer work, as it turns out, while i was playing fallout 4, windows moved the entire fallout 4 folder in to fallout 4 mods folder (it was literally another folder in the exact same location as fallout 4 folder (Probably created by wrye bash, nexus mod manager or fo4edit) i simply copied my fallout 4 folder and deleted it from the other folder, and all is well again).

i believe this is actually a windows 10 specific issue, as in windows 10 moved the folder, and more specifically the latest update was the cause of it, as i read somewhere that the latest update actually deleted peoples fallout 4 mods, however it only happens once (basically it will only happen once for after you get the latest update after that it will not happen again, does not happen to everyone, but i have seen it happen to a few people, and i believe all of our issues are connected).

so yea, our issues could be caused by the same thing (Windows 10 latest update) i only had windows 10 installed for 2 days, and this happened, yet had windows 7 for 4 years and never happened once hence why i believe that it is a window 10 very specific issue, and more specific the latest creators update (the 1 that fixed the dx9 vram limit - basically i think its the anniversary update) i only moved to windows 10 yesterday however. but have now gone back to windows 7 yet again, due to Bodyslide and Outfit studio causing windows 10 to freeze (whilst i attempt to batch build) and then the system just crashes. i swear me and windows 10 hate each other very much.

however if you dont have windows 10 then you can safely ignore this post xD

Did you ever find a solution for this in FO4? I started having the same issue this week.

I doubt it's a bug. Whenever either Bethesda, Steam, Nexus or Loot does an update it seems my current build gets destroyed. Since I've bought the game, every updates has resulted in either ruined settlements or workshop menus disappearing. Loot just had an update today and now parts of my menus are missing making the game dysfunctional yet again. If I start yet another new game everything will be fine until the next one of them does an update.

Just curious, have you installed the newest version of F4SE? When Bethesda updates Fallout 4, which they just did, the game won't play with mods enabled untill you do the F4SE update. On the Silverlock page download the new installer to desktop, then double click to run, it automatically finds the correct folder, hit yes if the UAC pops up. It also puts a shortcut on the desktop, It should have a vaultboy picture and say Fallout 4 (F4SE). Use this to start your game, by right clicking and choosing "Run as Administrator" click yes in the popup. Your game will start. If you're very new to this, go to YouTube and search for Gopher. He does fantastic guides from setting up mods, to some troubleshooting. With mods installed, never use Steam to start your game.
