transparent texture with Gimp, how?

You have to be sure there is something underneath the clothing for this to work. Like you can shorten a skirt, because there are legs under it, but if you lower a neckline, there is going to be a big hole in the torso of the actor that wears this item.

Makeing textures Transparent for Skyrim involves masking the Alpha layer in Gimp and enbableing the Alpha properties in the .nif.

First I'll explain the Alpha layer mask it's pretty simple so:

1. select your layer

2. right click select "Add Layer Mask..." choose "Transfer layer's alpha channel" then add

3. make changes any way you want - White = 0%(Transpaent) - Black = 100%(Transpaent), Greys vary in translucent

[ if you want suggestions: a) you can select areas and Collors>invert b) paint on the Alpha channel, I suggest use the pencil c) a bit of both ]

4. right click select "Apply Layer Mask" and save

If you need to inable the Alpha properties in the .nif read this.

thanks for the help PopReference -

I can do:

1. select your layer

2. right click select "Add Layer Mask..." choose "Transfer layer's alpha channel" then add

But I'm not sure what you're referring to make changes to, the new layer, or the old layer, and how do I make change the colors, either white gray or black?

If you can give some additional detail on 3 I've very much appreciate it.

Select your new Layer mask. Alpha channel is strictly black and white no colors or hues to worry about. Here's a few tips:

-Start by just painting see what happens when you try Black and White then different shades of grey

-You can select areas with a box or rope and fill the area with any shade or "color" > "invert"

-Use Pencil over spray paint or airbrush for sharper edges, easier for fuzzy selecting and inverting

-The X is the hotkey to swap between your 2 colors Black and White, recoloring is easier then eraser or undo

-If you want to simpley remove all transparency simple right click the layer and select "delete layer mask"

I'll share this link where you can find many more Gimp tutorials for future reference: http://gimpology.com/

Thank you so much for going into that much detail. I was able to do everything you taught me. I think I'm missing how I should save the image afterward becasue I combined the layers in order to save it and the image now has a transparnacy area I marked out along with the normal map, but in game it does not show transparent. Please advise.

Ok bro - here's what I've done:

1. select my layer

2. right click select "Add Layer Mask..." choose "Transfer layer's alpha channel" then add

3. make changes some changes to my mask layer all black to test.

4. right click select "Apply Layer Mask" and save

5 I followed this guide to detail: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=4092

6 In Nifskope I did not see the changes. In the game I did not see the changes.

I know I'm getting close, but there must be a step I'm missing. A little more hep please :)

Well you should know everything you need to get it to work. Getting everything to work in NifScope can take a few trys, you can should go over every detail you learned so far to make sure you didn't miss anything. If you're really stuck you may have to show your work to actually see what's wrong but I suggest you try and get it working yourself, good experience.
