Merge Plugin trouble

Hello, I've been playing SSE off and on for about a year. My first time experiencing mods for Skyrim ever, was when I started playing around with the mods on the Mods menu IN the game. But then recently I learned about how much MORE amazing I could make my game by staying away from Besthesda.net mods, and coming right to Nexus. Been learning a lot, and spent an entire day following this super detailed mod suggestion, Installation order, and load list guide. Found it a few days ago. Here:

https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/2846/?

After following that my game looks and plays amazing. Though now I had to start all over, because installing that many mods, broke my saves and makes me crash from time to time.

But at the end of the guide I had like 280 Plugins, from 140 mods, and my game started not loading some. So I googled, and found that there is a 255 plugin limit.

That is where I learned about getting around this by "merging" .esm's and .esp's. I found a super detailed start to finish Tutorial. Here.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0S6cpCwTezE&feature=youtu.be

But now I'm stuck on a part. But the tutorial didn't address "if you get "this message that means this is happening". I tried googling for a couple hours, but I can't find anything. And that tutorial is a year old, so I'm not hopefully the creator will be paying attention to old threads to help me.

I'm stuck at 9:46 in the tutorial. :( I followed every step, up to that point, but when I hit the "OK" button I get an error message: "list index out of bounds (3)" It does not go to the next step as in your video. It just goes to "Plugins" tab, and all the plugins I did select show up with various codes. The Skyrim, Updates, and 3 Expansion files are "Black listed" with a black X. I tried googling, and I can't find an answer. I'm playing Skyrim Special Edition.

I have 282 Plugins. My active Plugin count is 255. The rest are unchecked and not active. I only selected My weapons and armor plug ins for the merge however, and well as the Skyrim, Updates, Hearthfires, DawnGuard, Dragonborn.

Does anyone know what is wrong? what does "list index out of bounds (3)" mean?

Quote "list index out of bounds (3)"-

By no means am I an expert, but I encountered errors when merging mods (I used the guide you referenced as a starting point as well) for one of 2 reasons:

1.the mods I was trying to merge were not in consecutive order in my load list....yes the ones you are trying to merge must be arranged in your load order to be directly consecutive or it will not work

2.trying to add a merged mod to a load order that already contains 255 active plugins. You have to leave room for the new merged mod or not going to happen.

More importantly though was learning that i can't put 20 pounds in a 10 pound bag without problems down the line. There has to be a plan for successful merging of mods to cut down on plugin count, but the overall game plan needed to be a realistic goal. I have had enough CTD's and re-installs to make me much more cautious in my approach to game bloat.

A lot of it is just various Armor, and Weapon plugins, and a BULK of the mods are just texture replacements. Just under 80 or so are texture packs. Which each individual monster or thing it replaced came with it's own .esm file.

About 30 mods are Armor and Weapon packs that I have down loaded over the year.

About 12 follower mods.

about 10 special bosses that drop armor

Then on top of the SAME mod often having multiple files, and compatibility patches..... I have 140 mods... that's 115 extra files that came with them.

I wasn't meaning don't do it, just that I have taken a much more measured approach to it. I'm running a big mod load including some merged and I'm still looking for the unstable parts of this build.

The 2 reasons I offered for the error code you're running into may or may not apply, but they will keep 'merge mods' from completing. Especially number 2....I found it way to easy to forget a simple thing like starting to merge 4-5 mods into one and then the game tells me sorry, no can do, you already have your 255 limit; there's no room left.

I went down to 249, but I'm still getting the same error.

But to be clear, when they say not installed mods, does this mean more than just double clicking on the Mods list, and getting the big red circle for not installed but the mod is greyed out?

Or do they mean I have to completely uninstall AND delete the file?

I've also been trying to delete mods that I dont even need anymore. But I downloaded those through the in game MOD page. I deleted them from the load order there. but for some reason they STILL show up in my NMM list on the "plugins" tab. I can't figure out how to delete them there.

EDIT:

OK Issue resolved. Took a long time to find, because I kept getting different answers, but found it. You ignore that message. And continue like it never occurred. And apparently best answer I could get was "it doesn't do anything".

Tutorial threw me off more, because he went for some time before even getting to the actual next step. So I kept thinking I was doing something wrong because my next screen "didn't look like his". But eventually he got to the next part.

Hmmm did you mean you deleted the mods from the menu in the game? I don't think that actually does the trick. You might need to use the uninstall feature in NMM.
