Where do I start?

This is really becoming painful lol.

I seemed to have been going well, with the game loading up and letting me choose my character. Now I get a CTD whenever I step out of my cell after the intro. It seems to be right after I walk halfway into the secret tunnel after they open the wall.

I've tried to disable Better Cities and Open cities but it still causes crashes right at this spot. Any advice on troubleshooting this? I haven't read a single issue like this is any of the posts for the mods I've been using... Feels like it's a 'me' problem :(

I agree with "addicted" above: it's easy to get excited about adding new mods, but it's best to take it slow, especially when it comes to big, complicated mods like Better Cities or Unique Landscapes. I know it's annoying, but it's probably best to start over (I had to do the same thing, fwiw). I suggest downloading Oblivion again, installing all the mod managers, OBSE, BOSS, and stabilizing stuff I mentioned, then making a backup or duplicate of your Oblivion folder. That way you have a stable base to fall back on in case something goes awry with other mods you want to try.

  • 3 weeks later...

Followed the same instructions and did not add to Steam, but get CTDs as well. The mod manager has gone through some versions since I last used it. I suspect I will need to reinstall and go step by bloody step to find the failure point.

Hey Jim, I assume you're talking about my OP. Any question I can try to answer?

I was indeed. I uninstalled and reinstalled, successfully keeping the game I had started. This time, I used Wrye Bash without problems. The main question I have would be order of install (do any items need to be done before others). Specific ones I intend to load are:

  • BOSS
  • Unofficial Patches
  • Oblivion Stutter Remover
  • EngineBugFixes
  • ENBoost
  • More Heap (used this years ago and remember it being safe)

Mods are mostly immersive or simple skin replacers. I remember that ever since the official Oblivion patch (don't remember numbers), Oblivion crashed on exit. I do not remember a general Oblivion fix for that.

I don't think the install order matters too much for these performance boosters, though I'm inclined to get BOSS going off the bat. I'd clean the DLCs after that (Simplified explanation here) before installing other mods, just so it's easier to keep track of.

You want Fast Exit!

A couple other things related to these performance/stability mods:

In addition to the ones you mentioned, consider New Vegas Anti-Crash, which is compatible with Oblivion. Also recommended is the 4gb patch or LAA, which do the same thing.

Oblivion Stutter Remover has a heap management feature that is apparently compatible with MoreHeap, so long as the heap size for both is the same. I had good luck for the longest time with a heap size of 768 but had to switch down to 512 when I learned that the larger size in OSR was making it impossible for Oblivion to load or start a game. Keep that in mind if you're having stability issues!
