Skyrim SE Won't Start in Windows 10

Was working fine until latest skyrim update. Now I generally get to the first menu, but when I click on play, it just goes back to the desktop. I have tried all the bethesda suggested fixes and no positive result. I am going through skyrim withdrawal. Also I now find the old skyrim also will not launch. Any suggestions?

Is the game installed in the regular program files folder on the drive that also contains your OS? If so, there's the odd chance UAC blocks the game from starting because the game alters register entries.

Do you run the game in Administrator mode?

Are you using the SSE Script Extender and have you updated it after the game updated?

I went to steam, properties for skyrim se and browse local files and deleted all of them found there. Then I went to skyrim se in steam and clicked on uninstall. No error messages throughout. Then I reinstalled, still the same problem. I tried disabling windows defender, still the same problem. The only thing different now from yesterday when it was working is that now when I click the desktop icon to start skyrim se, I get the following prompt: Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device? Never got that before for skyrim se. Any ideas?

That's UAC (User Account Control). If you're the only user of the computer you're on, turn it off completely.

I'm still on Win7 so it'll be different under your OS, but I have to open the "Action Center" (the place where you can make changes to some OS settings). In Action Center there's a panel on the left with options. One of them is "Change User Account Control settings". Left-click it and in the next menu turn the slider all the way to the bottom and hit "OK". Then, if I remember correctly, you'll need to reboot your computer.

UAC is meant to be an extra security measure but is basiclly a pain up the bottom by constantly stopping you from performing the most basic actions with stupid pop-up questions that need a simple click to get rid of. No extra security in that at all.

I am crossing my fingers, but it appears that I have resolved the problem and now can play skyrim again. The only thing that worked for me was to undo the latest windows 10 update. I also deleted all my mods and am slowly adding some back in. So far I have only added three mods and I am going to be more selective in what I add. Thanks for the help on this forum.

I had this problem and it was driving me crazy for days. I had loaded a non-SE mod from a manual download in NMM.

I removed the offending mod and boom, it works perfectly
