New video card- is this accurate observation?

Hello,

Was wondering if this is placebo or not. I upgraded from an 8800gtx card to a 550ti card. I am not experiencing any major increases in FPS. But, the whole experience seems smoother and everything SEEMS to flow more? Is it true- that it may not always be just about FPS numbers. Or, am I just trying to justify money outlay? lol

It's quite possible increase your average FPS without increasing the maximum, or simply remove stuttering and so on. Video memory amount and speed probably help a lot.

I would concur with this statement, since you probably have a larger frame buffer and of course a faster GPU on that 550 card, it helps to give you a smoother, overall experience in-game :)

Also note that the placebo effect maybe playing into this some too.

The 8800 GTX -vs- 550TI

No question about it,. the 550TI beats the 8800 in every aspect...except price.

memory clock 900mhz -vs- 1026 MHZ

Process size 90nm -vs- 40nm

twice the transistor count

bandwidth 86.4GB/s -vs- 98.5 GB/s

memory 768MB DDR3 -vs- 1GB DDR5

the list goes on

Your increased game play "smoothness" will largly be due to the data processing capabilities of that wonderful little beauty you have there. (soon to be chugging along from my side of the web)

Thanks guys,

I'm down on the placebo effect! :)

I will give this 8800gtx card one thing. It's old and it still is really doing great. It does very well with this game. It just amazes me how fast it is still. I will retire it to another machine. I don't think I could ever get rid of the thing. It has always reminded me of a muscle car. lol
