Steam 1.5 update, game killer?

Though I had my Steam options for Skyrim set to Do not automatically update this game, I got the 1.5 patch anyway. The patch "fixed" the Smithing skill all right . . . If you are not already at 100 you soon will be. Improving 6 hunting bows raised my Smithing skill from 47 to 64 and my character level from 25 to 27 (self-nerfing to only improve what I find and not buying crafting supplies). This happens with and without my Boyd's Better Balance Smithing and Leveling mods installed.

I have a mod that modifies smithing.

Apparently the update silently changed smithing leveling rates and didn't mention that.

(You can see it in the details using tesVsnip or CK)

Now I have to figure out how to fix that ... since crafting a dagger puts me up 30 levels now.

Silently changing things ... not cool.

EDIT:

Found the problem!!

The update changes Skill Use Mult in Smithing to 1 ... in all former versions of skyrim it was 160

it also changes "fTemperingSkillUseMult" from original 2 to 1

These are two major changes for any mod that changes leveling speed or modifies the smithing tree!!

Same here.

does the hyper smithing leveling happen even with zero mods loaded?

i haven't tried that yet.

I modified my own mods to clone the effect of the update.esm. That made everything go back to normal! Slow leveling as usual!

It's good you found the problem, but your wrong about the silent change part, it's #4 on the new features list:

"New features

New cinematic kill cameras for projectile weapons and spells

New kill moves and animations for melee weapons

Shadows on grass available (PC)

Smithing skill increases now factor in the created item’s value

Improved visual transition when going underwater

Improved distance LOD transition for snowy landscapes"

Obviously it wasn't a great fix or well tested, but you can blame the beta testers for that one.

Hmm, I created a Fix Smithing mod to incorporate those changes and loaded it right after the update esm but it made no difference. I compared the Boyd's Better Balance Leveling mod to the base file and it already has different values in Smithing, the fTemperingSkillUse variables, the fConstructibleSkillUse variables, and the fXP variables. There has to be another setting not adjusted by BBB because I have the same issue with and without it installed. I guess I'm going crosseyed here because I can't find the crucial setting. Ideas?

Except i played the beta for a week straight, had no crashes, and smithing is dreadfully slow crafting anything worth less than 250 gold. Either I'm really really lucky, am careful about the mods I use and their possible incompatibilities, or some things changed drastically between the beta 1.5 and the official 1.5.
