Steam infected

Good morning,

I was running TESV when a window tells me that steam is updating his platform when at 99% avast tells me that steamerrorrepoter.exe is infected by Win32:malware-gen so steam was unable to perform the update, so with this matter I cannot play TESV because this s**t of Steam has infected files...

What can I do? Should I wait some signal from Steam?

I always though that Steam was a bad way to manage games and so on, just thinking of that abomination of steamworkshop...

Best Regards

As this is not being reported by a lot of people - this is the first report of this I have seen - My first guess would be a false positive.

OR, your system was already infected and the virus is trying to infect other files on your system.

Try running a scan with a different AV. Preferably one that runs off of a bootable USB or CD and bypasses windows altogether. Here is a link to one I have used successfully in the past.

FREE Kaspersky Rescue Disk - it is updated often and has the capability to download updates.

Several other AV makers have a similar FREE rescue type disk that can be run from either CD or USB

Many thanks :)

Although Avast has updated the viruses definitions so Steam has manage to update his platform, I'm going to use this utility you left me anyway to see in a very deep way all the possible threats against my pc ;)

Many Thanks again

Most likely it is just that STEAM uses the same methods that Virii do and unless the AV company adds it to the list of exceptions in the virus definition file it will be picked up as a virus - Since Steam released an update the virus definition file has probably not yet been updated to let the program know that this Virus called Steam is an exception to the rule and is released by a company that everyone allows to infect their systems.

Oh, another steam lover. I can't wait till another gaming company (like CDREDProject) comes along with some Superior titles and does not require their customers to jump through hoops so they (the game co.) can maintain a phony warm and fuzzy feeling about piracy of their products. At that time steam and all the creepy game companies that use their services will be thrown under the largest bus as rapidly as possible (at least by me.) S**t even GFWL was never as much as a pain in the A*S as steam.

Deeply agree with your words. If I were Bethesda I would relegate Steam only for the updates (which so far it's not clear at all how steam updates skyrim...) but even I guess that there would be a lots of problems with the patch distributions... Could you imagine? Steam releases for PC a patch that is actually a patch for PS3? :S what a mess that would be...

Great example of this would have been if youd followed Borderlands from when they launched and the fun they had with their patches and lack of ability to fix bugs not because the company sucks but because they couldnt sdo something on PC that they then werent allowed to do on 360 because of Micro$oft.

Same basic reason CCP went PS3 only with their upcoming console-MMO tie in game Dust514. Apparently Micro$oft wasnt down with the idea of them having a microtransaction system where M$ wasnt getting achjunk of enerything purchased lol

Go the way of the anti piracy books you used to have to use in the old days. "look at page 32, paragraph 5, word 3 letter 2 ehat is it?" Edited by buddahcjcc
