Steam version OBSE trouble

So yeah, OBSE isn't working for me on the steam version. I have put all the files in the proper place, and turned on steam community overlay, but it still isn't running OBSE properly. I found what I think is an older obse_loader.exe that works for the steam version, but it is incompatible with some mods I would like to use. Any ideas you guys have about troubleshooting?

Are you launching the game from Steam? The Steam version of the game cannot be started with obse_loader.exe, it needs to be started from Steam. Also, thinking about it, where is the game installed... ? If it is located in a Program Files folder somewhere, then that might also cause some trouble.

YES, I am launching it from Steam. And yes, I ALSO know that running it from the programs folder is a bad idea. Steam has it's own standalone folder on my disc. And I have read the instructions for installation and everything obvious on the internet.

Oh okay. Hmm. If you have done everything correctly, then it sort of makes it difficult to suggest or ask anything. The way it should work with the Steam version is to:

  • install the game outside Program Files (which you have done)
  • download OBSE and the updated loader from the official website (which you have done)
  • install the files in the folder with Oblivion.exe in it and then overwriting the loader with the updated one (which you have done)
  • launch Oblivion from Steam, the Oblivion launcher will open, clicking "play" launches the game with OBSE (which you have done)

Steam Overlay should not be needed, I have had it disabled globally myself since forever and OBSE has worked just fine. Also, it should not be necessary to run anything as administrator, just writing it here because a lot of people are running Steam itself as administrator to solve some OBSE issue, but that should obviously not be needed (I do not need to) and Steam will display a warning at startup when doing so. But since you are doing everything correctly, I am running out of ideas. Maybe someone else know of something small that may be the issue... ?

How do you know it is not running OBSE properly? One way to check it could be to find an NPC in-game, open the console, select the NPC and use the following commands in the console to check and toggle the essential status of the NPC (for testing only):

IsRefEssential
SetRefEssential 0
IsRefEssential
SetRefEssential 1
IsRefEssential

If I remember correctly, they should work in the console. If they return errors about unknown functions, then OBSE may not have been loaded. If everything works, then OBSE definitely should be working, I think.

  • 2 years later...

I'm having much the same problem, not being able to run obse with the Steam version of Oblivion (I'm using the "Elder Scrolls Anthology" version, which supposedly required Steam, so yeah). I've tried most of the suggestions on the various threads here, with no results. All of this does lead me to one question, however. Everyone states to start Oblivion "in Steam"; I'm using Mod Organizer, however. Does starting Oblivion "in Steam" mean using the [oblivion.exe] or the [oblivion_launcher.exe] commands that are found in MO, or actually starting it from the Steam Bootstrapper Client/Steam display? I've done both, to no avail. When I start it using the launcher command in MO, I get all my mods listed, but they aren't in the list when I activate the launcher from the bootstrapper client/Steam display.

f you are using OBSE, you must launch it with obse_loader.exe.
