Impossibly Low FPS-Unplayable Now

Hi everyone...

I'm not new to modding Bethesda games (OB & Skyrim) but I am relatively new to FO4. I have 155 mods according to NMM and more than adequate hardware to run a variety of texture and other performance mods I have installed. The problem is that now I have such low FPS and massive stuttering that my game has gotten unplayable.

It wasn't always this way. I remember playing with 35 to 45 fps when I first started my first game, but as it slowly progressed, it has degraded to where it's at an inexplicably low, 1-9 fps today!. And I don't have a clue why this is. I've lowered the resolution, screen size, bought new hardware, tweaked my .ini files without changing my fatally flawed fps range. I've even tried to find answers online but instead found my game's performance is so out of line with other so-called low fps reports, that I'm now asking for help with this as I'm going slowly crazy not being able to play my favorite game.

Even with my heavily modded FO4, I would expect to be able to achieve at least 35 - 45 fps from comparisons to other player comments of system descriptions. Therefore, I can only conclude there must be some other critical cause for my distressed performance. I'd appreciate any help anyone can offer.

My Rig: AMD FX-8350 (8-core), ROG Mobo, 16 Gb RAM, Hybrid HDD, 8 Gb Video, Win7-64 bit, Steam FO4-updated - Loot reports no dirty plugins and no warnings or errors

I do not know if this will fix it, but your load order is not quite right:

It should be in this order:

1. FO4

2. DLCRobots

3. DLCWorkshop1

4. DLCCoast

5. DLCWorkshop2

6. DLCWorkshop3

7. DLCNukaWorld

I would suggest you might try LOOT .. it's not perfect, but it does a good job and very minimal adjustment after that.

As the above post stated, if you have anything opened in the background, this WILL have a Cause/Effect in FPS. I would even strongly suggest that you go play the game in OFF LINE MODE.

Make sure E-mail - Internet Browser - Pagers / IM's and such are turned OFF or Closed.

Everything they said above. You are not reading mod descriptions, posts, you are not using LOOT, you are not cleaning master files and those among other things, are the cause of your poor FPS. Scrap Everything MUST BE the last mod in your load order ... read the mod description and use LOOT and do yourself a great favor .... I copy/paste what Gambit77 suggested as a proper load order. I do recommend to run LOOT first, place Scrap Everything at the very bottom of your load order ( regardless of what LOOT think about this mod ) and only with LOOT, you should be fine ... BUT ... read every mod description and find out where they should be placed in your load order, what is the compatibility suggested by the mod author and manually move those mods after you have run LOOT.

This should be your process :

- Go to Steam, right click on Fallout 4, go to Properties and Local and clean cache files.

- Go back to NMM and run LOOT

- Clean all your master files using FO4Edit ( do not clean Fallout4.esm - never - )

- Run LOOT again after you clean all your master files ( DLCs )

- Manually place some mods according to what the mod author suggested in the mod description. Place Scrap Everything at the very bottom of your load order ( do not pay attention to what LOOT think about this mod ) and place other mods, as I said before, according to what the mod author thinks. Most of the time, LOOT a very good job doing this but compare what LOOT does with the list provided below and what the mod author suggested.

- Save your profile ( NMM ) and play.

Because your game is messed up now, I do not know if you would have to go back to your first saved game. Try and continue from where you are, otherwise, delete all of your saved games and go back to the one without mods and start from there.

I tell you based on my own experience. Having a lot of texture mods will affect your FPS a lot. My rig is Nvidia 1070, SSD, i7-6700, 16gb RAM and a 144hz monitor and even with that, I had serious FPS drop when I used several texture mods. I do recommend to have only one ( Graphix is IMHO the best out there ) but you would have to tweak some features in your game menu video options. Godrays must be off, lens flare and blur. If you want to, use the console and type : gr off .... and this will turn your godrays off completely and you will see some FPS gain in your game.

Despite how good that texture mod is, I do not use it. Actually, I do not use any at all. Fallout4 graphics are not bad and by turning off AA filter, I am able to enhance my graphic with my Nvidia card to a point that I do not need any graphic or texture mod. In your case, perhaps you need it and try but I do recommend not to have more than two. This is very personal but I do prefer performance than quality. Happy gaming.

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks for all the great advice everyone and I do apologize for my tardy reply - RLI. Let me update you on my recent discoveries...since my first post I decided to do the unthinkable and started researching more and ripping apart my game. My system isn't the issue here - 8-cores, 8Gb video and 16 Gb RAM is ample to run a minimally textured game. So, taking all your good advice sopmac45 I updated my old version of LOOT (wasn't identifying dirty mods) cleaned and updated my mods with FO4Edit (found some installation errors) and started following Gambit77's load order as well as isolating and de-activating performance hungry mods for testing purposes.

None of these changes improved my game performance substantially enough, to warrant being the real problem however. The real cause of my low FPS turned out to be ENBoost! As soon as I removed Boris's mod from my game I regained 15 FPS and am playing again. Hallelujah! I'm still not anywhere near 45 fps but playing between 23-35 fps is working for me...no more lag or CTD's! (Who'd have thought this great performance mod could be causing my lag and fps drop...I sure didn't. But Boris does say in his Readme that ENBoost may not work for everyone!)

I also decided to clean up my install and start a fresh game implementing all the suggestion here. Better habits result in better enjoyment with fewer failures. Thanks again for being here for me, everyone, and keep up the great support.

PS. Just a note on Load Order...I've found that no matter what load order you follow you must remember that NMM doesn't keep this order after installing new mods - newly installed mods are placed at the bottom of the list (refer to NMM "Plugins" tab) and therefore pushes everything else up the list. This happened with my Scrap Everything.esp which is supposed to remain at the very bottom of the list (thank you sopmac45 for pointing this out) but due to my inexperience with FO4 got overlooked. I realize now, the importance of monitoring my load order and re-ordering the list as necessary. Hope this helps someone in a similar situation.

I get below 20 fps sometimes when im outdoors in the commonwealth, and usually a smooth 60fps in interior cells. When it comes to outdoor texture mods, less is more obviously. One time all my games dropped down to a total freeze in fps and and couldn't figure out the problem and I realized I hadn't don't a malwarebytes scan in awhile and that ended up being the cause... so make sure you run a malware, antivirus and adware scan just to be safe. I also recommend the mod PhyOp to lighten the load on your GPU, then overwrite whatever HD textures you want later with other mods
