Crash to Desktop when unloading city cells (but New Sheoth works fine)

I'm honestly baffled. Whenever the game unloads a city, it crashes. At first I thought that it was one of those "crashing on loading new cell" things, but no. For example : Let's say I fast travel to Anvil. No problems so far. If i fast travel out, no problems either. However, if I spend long enough there, or go deep into a building, or sleep or whatever, when I attempt to leave the city either through the gates or by fast travelling, it shows me the loading screen for a half second then stops responding and CtDs. This can be repeated 100% of the time; if it happens once, you relaunch the game and try to leave, it is guaranteed to crash again. Interestingly, purging cell buffers through console while in an interior cell of the crashing city also causes a crash. An easy way (though repetitive and annoying) way to circumvent this is to go inside a building, save, restart the game (so that the game loads without the exterior loaded in), load the new save, and coc anywhere except the exterior of the city, whether an outside cell like weyeexterior or just weye doesn't matter. I used Anvil as an example, but all cities have this, with the exception of New Sheoth in the Shivering Isles.

Here's my mod order according to NMM. I am using OBSE and my oblivion.exe has the 4gb patch.

It's very possible that the problem stems from something else, but I had to stop using Ashes to Ashes. In my case it was causing guards and sometimes other NPCs to drop dead for no reason. The sudden death syndrome stopped as soon as I uninstalled Ashes to Ashes.

I know it sounds weird, but it does give you someplace to start.

- Edit - What are you using to sort your load order?

- Edit 2 - FYI ... according to BDBS - Brighter Interiors Readme.txt you are only supposed to use one of the two possible ESPs at a time, either Brighter or Brightest but not both.

  • 2 weeks later...

This used to happen to me all the time, and still does occasionally.

I believe it has to do with memory management.

You can try installing one or more of the various stability-enhancing mods, which definitely does help.

And, my suggestion would be to find one of the "pocket home" type mods that has a small cell to which you can teleport from anywhere. Go there, save, and then go to another city.
