The after-math of a Perfect Solar Storm

All of this is in my point of view, what I think would happen. 2012 is an odd year with the sun so far, and it might just be the year we lose power forever. Think about that, no technology, no video games, no AC, no cars, no computers, and you'll never get them back. But what impact would that have on the world? Major impact, but worse than you think.

America is under an election for president that will either rebuild the dead country or deliver the final blow. Every bit of news is delivered via technology, and voting is involved there too. America would close in on the day of election, and boom, power outage from the sun, but we can't turn the power on, or repair it. The Earth absorbed our electricity, and sent it into space, because the sun took it from us. America's current president would have to stay president and guide us through it, but on the other side of the country, where they can't receive the news, law and order is erased. Crime lords begin a mafia that puts people in charge of cities that collapse, and this crime spree continues, until it becomes slavery and terrorism. As the remaining weapons of war spread to the hands of the new leaders, they use these weapons and cause the government and all of DC to collapse, and the country is left with no leader, no law, and people running it using slavery.

With no one to stop them, world-wide terrorist groups join forces and use the remaining weapons of warfare to spread a reign of terror on the world. The countries they originate in corrupt as the groups take charge, and use power to attack millions of people, and a storm of death breaks in the Middle East.

With the branches of government falling to mafias in the shape of America's, the countries that said they'd get through the harsh age fall to the ones they wanted to stop, being outnumbered, and these groups get more and more power, until they can't get anymore in they're own country. So they seek it elsewhere, attacking countries that survive the lack of power grids and mafias, until the world is in chaos.

What does everyone think of that?

I think that people over estimate how crazy we really are. Sure if there was a permanently out grid there would be some people doing looting, but things would probably go back to an altered normal soon after. During the depression people couldn't afford gas so they had horses tow their cars. We could go back to old methods of travel as cars have not really even been around that long. Voting polls would just have to be more localized and during daytime hours. I am sure the turnout of voters would be lower, but they were not exactly that high to begin with. The quality of life would be lower but there would be nothing we could do about it.

Even though we depend on our technology, humans are very adaptable and we are also pretty civilized when we want to be  . I doubt a solar flare will wipe out our grid this year but you never know. If it does happen I suppose I will just have to take up a rural hobby at my farm  (maybe whittling a rocking chair to put on the porch).

How exactly will we lose ALL power though? The solar storm theory has always confused me, how would it damage actual powerline/powerplants? I live only a few miles from a dam, It currently does not produce electricity, but its new owner has fixed it and it has the capability to produce power. How would a solar storm effect things like these or powerline, most of which are berried underground?

If most power was destroyed, a country would have to really luck out and have most of their equipment still intact should they want to dominate other territories. Even then big nations will still have some functioning vehicles (those stored in areas that would be insulated from the storm), and most guns should still work as most are electronic. The only threat from groups trying to take over is if a large county can rebuild faster than others.

The worse problems would be on a citizen level and that would be finding food. A lot of people are going to starve.
