Fallout New Vegas Crashing on Start-Up -- Can't Find Problem...

Alright, well I wanted to add mods to my FNV game ofc, and there were quite a lot I wanted. Now I haven't started a save game yet, and after reading so many mods saying they worked best when starting a save game, I thought ok I'll install and have at it. I know though that installing without checking every single one can at times be dangerous though, which is why I made sure checking each mod that were mods that were in general compatible with most anything, or had patches if need be for certain programs.

 

So after using FOMM to install all, and activate etc..., I start up FNV and it crashes...So asked some questions in chat, and someone suggest the BOSS program. I ran it and it came up with 4 possible incompatibilities -- One was a Companion lvl cap, a Flashlight mod, populated casino mod, and Fellout. Now some I don't think were really a problem, but I wasn't gonna take a chance. So I uninstalled them all, and then afterwards Verified Game Cache on Steam. It found one problem, which it then fixed.

 

The game is still crashing though. After re-running BOSS, it comes up with all plugins Active (few bash tags telling me what ones need DLC), but no incompatibilities. The Conflict checker on FOMM doesn't turn up anything either. I know most would suggest re-install etc...I'm trying to avoid that though, for obvious reasons lol, mainly cause of how time consuming it'd be to redo all of it. Especially, though, since nothing is turning up a conflict.

I don't know specifically what would be causing this, but a few general crash on startup fixes I know of are:

 

- Updating your drivers (or just try updating DirectX first)

- Clean/fix your registry

- Run in compatibility mode

Run FNVEdit and see if it there's a mod that fails to load because of a missing master or something similar. Every time my game has crashed on startup it has been because of a load order issue, and FNVEdit will quickly tell you which mod is the culprit.

You really need to get your active plugins down to 140 or less. 272 is waaay over the limit.

I agree with the above, you've got way too many mods installed there. Even if you get it started it's likely to be unstable, not only crashes but vanishing meshes and textures too.

Not only way too many mods, but also watch the bash tags ... if you don't have the needed DLC ... crash city

yup way too many ,also ditch "purge cell buffers " its not necessary the game does it by itself

 

bastardofbodom ,good advice there but id add for compat mode run in compat mode for vista (vista is very similar to 7 its daddy infact , XP is a different species) and periodically defragging your hd helps weekly will do ( don't de-frag SSD's they dont like it ) this all helps as will disk cleanup also having at least 5-10% of free HD space is beneficial but not essential allows programs a little elbow room especially when installing a new game etc .

272 mods? Thats a good one :)

the game engine can NOT handle over 256! Theres just no way for it to load more then 256 mods period. (254 once you subtract fallout.esm and 0xff for savegame data)

that said, realisticly it can't handle over 140 without getting very unstable, Nobody is really sure why, 128 would make a more sense as a limit but it seems pushing it to 140 is when troubles really happen.

I'm almost tempted to think that this post is someone's idea of a joke, but if you're serious, let me echo the above advice to prune your load order. You can probably start by removing redundant mods. A quick scan showed 3 or 4 mods where you have multiple versions of the same mod running.
