psu and 7950 crossfire upgrade

Recommended Posts

I just inherited a large sum of Money do to Loss of my Grand parents  my budget i set aside for myself is 2000$, although i could go further then that.

In memory i am going to treat myself to something awesome, another 7950 and a 1500watt psu. Also getting another 24inch viewsonic to put in Eyefinity  Yup going full out.

Any psu recommendations..

Price range is not a issue.

I just want to know what is the best you can buy..

Let the debate begin. Remember it has to be 1500watts  Witch sometimes can be hard to find. I'm not to sure what the best is actually, i usually just stick to what works

No just 1000Watt, and i don't even think its Crossfire ready, i bought it nearly 2 years ago. So i am just playen it safe. I might add 3 way crossfire one of these days.

Each card is recommended to have atleast a 500watt psu, 3 cards equals close to 1500watts, but i douubt they use that much.Just need the head room when i do cross that path.

well i messed around with some numbers, and two 7950s with an OCed 3960X CPU (which uses more power then your CPU, which is an 1100T IIRC?) and tons of fans and with everything at 100% max load (which youll probably never do), 100% CPU TDP (which is says youll never reach) several HDDs and SSDs with 32GB RAM and 4 things charging from USB drives, and a fan controller, Cathodes, still only use 829W.

with all that on your PC, Tri SLI with 7950s, it predicts 954W and for Quad SLI it predicts 1079W

for comparison, i changed it so that it was an 1100T OCed what would be considered a decent amount (4.5GHz) 1 HDD, 5 High Performance Fans (which doesnt make much difference what type you select) recommended Load and CPU TDP settings, no cathodes, but still fan controllers, and the USB charged devices at 4, basically turned it down to what i would suspect would be your average build,

7950s SLI : 608W

7950s Tri SLI : 721W

7950s Quad SLI : 833W

even if thats under estimating it slightly, thats still well under even a 1000W PSU.

test out the numbers yourself :)

I have other things like LED fans, hardware. monitors. and so on. Like this calculate everything that uses the psu in general. Remember its not just motherboard, hard drives, its the external stuff aswell, as a whole unit.

I have been working with pc for a good 12 years now, well ever sense my first build back in 2000. I had some builds that wouldn't start at all do to the smallest of things. It could be anything.

I have other things like LED fans,

caluculated for that. i said that. LED fans use like 1 or 2 more Watts then a regular fan. and the fans i calculated with were "High Performance" fans, which use more Watts then LED fans, according to that calculator

monitors.

monitors dont connect to your power supply, i assumed you knew that,

Remember its not just motherboard, hard drives, its the external stuff as well, as a whole unit.

whatever you think i didnt add, still isnt going to add up to anywhere close to 1000W, considering a Quad SLI Rig was still ~150W+ under your limit. what your going is ~400W under your limit! nvm a 1500W PSU.

also, the calc you linked to is the same one i linked to.

Yes i know that, All i am saying is i rather have more headroom then i need then none at all. thats how i built my last pc. I even saved my psu for atleast 2 builds already. Although this ones getting quite cramped for my liking, well even my case barely has room for a 7950 lol, Downfall with the antec 900 cases is that the psu is at the botton. So you have to stretch the cable across from psu and the gpu and the rest of the hardware. I'm very tempted on getting a new case.

Also on the list,I'm might do that..

 you can't change me i like overkill, thats why i am very tempted on going triple crossfire, another draw back of the antec 900 series is it only supports sli or crossfire.

most cases are bottom mount PSUs, cause heat goes up. keeps the PSU that much cooler. just buy cabale extensions (i recommend Bit Fenix cable extensions. they can be bought from their site, and probably amazon too)

overkill and head room are find. but your literally getting double the power youd need in a 1500W PSU. a 1000W has overkill and head room. even Triple SLI you have ~300W head room. thats so much its not even funny. the only thing youd gain from getting a 1500W PSU is a big number and $400 down the drain.

if your sooo desperate to have ~500W+ of head room for i couldnt even make a guess what for, save your self money and just get a 1200W PSU like the Seasonic 1200W (basically the best rated power supply out there) or the Corsair AX1200W (which i believe is actually made by Seasonic as well) but again, i cant imagine why the thought process of you needing a new power supply even crossed your head!!! :P
