bigman28
Question - Basically what I'm asking is would it be better for the American police of the fallout universe to carry a police pistol, 10mm, or a 9mm? Police Officers Inventory: Police Baton- Defiantly... Police Pistol- Probably?? Kinda small caliber though... 9mm (in place of Police Pistol) - maybe... more modern. 10mm (in place of Police Pistol or 9mm) - possible... the vault 101 guards had these as standard issue. Hunting Shotgun - Standard issue for most real police.... ____________________ What do you think, Please leave your opinion as this is for a mod I've been working for a while now. It will not only restore Freeside and the Strip, but also open over thirty new interiors in Freeside... so far I've made nine interiors in two weeks so progress has been good. Flipout6
There are obviously going to be several different ranks of police around. Regular, Garden-variety cops would be decent unarmed fighters, like the ones in real life, and carry a 9mm pistol at least, and probably a police baton. They may also use .357 magnum revolvers, or hunting shotguns for the higher level content in the mod. Not sure for armor, although regular security uniforms might be for S.W.A.T teams, unless they wear combat armor or something. Detectives would more than likely use a police pistol or, if higher level content, a .44 magnum revolver. They would wear some badass trenchcoats, too. Forensic Investigators, if they were armed at all, would have a 9mm or 10mm pistol and wear a lab coat or all-purpose science suit. S.W.A.T teams would be more heavily armed, wearing either security uniforms or black combat armor, (used by the van graffs.) They would use 9mm and 10mm submachine guns at lower levels, 12.7mm submachine guns at later levels, with assault and marksman carbines appearing in the mid levels, although their weapons would be quite varied, including some with shotguns, sniper rifles, grenades, or even C4. Riot Police would be decked out in Riot Gear (Lonesome Road.) or, if you don't have that, reinforces combat armor. Weapons can vary from Cattle prods and other fatigue-damaging items to Riot shotguns, assault weapons, and some kind of melee weapon. The chief, if any, would probably be in either a special uniform or a slightly different trench coat then the rest, perhaps using a huge-ass gun like a hunting revolver. These are just opinions, however. I hope this helps!
kschang77
FYI, LAPD carries Kimber .45 ACP (i.e. Colt .45's, which is in Zion expansion) Also, are we talking regular beat cops, detectives, office workers, or SWAT?
minngarm
Well using 40s-60s american police as the basis it would be the 38 snub as the most common sidearm and a baton. Basically dead money has the general cop armament right. Now they would also have trench guns (shot guns) i think usually around 12 gauge rather than 20 gauge not entirely certain on the size of the shotgun. Anyways it would also be augmented with the best marksmen in the squad armed with either a springfield or garand as well. Now you're higher ranking officers did not normally get special equipment, that would be assigned too members of the squadron based on skills and needs, but they would have access to requisition additional items from the armory. This would include SMGs such as the notorious tommy gun. As for 9mm that was not assigned standard until the 70s, now days you can find most commonly the glock, usually a 40 police seldome ever carry smaller caliber weapons like 9mm as they practice almost religiously the one shot one "kill" philosophy of gun use. Basically meaning they carry hefty sidearms and shotguns now that could easily severe a limb.

Basically dead money has the general cop armament right. Correct, before people got body armor .38 special is enough. As body armor got invented (bless you, Father Zeglen) hand guns got upgraded to .44 magnum and so on. I actually wrote a paper on body armor (and ammo development). .44 magnum was specifically advertised by S&W as "taking proof out of bulletproof". minngarm
a 38 will still punch through, FMJ of course, not the "soft" rounds or hollow points.
xMetalKitten
My father is a police officer. He carries a standard .45 Glock, with a government issued 18 round magazine. Officers can take classes to be permitted to carry AR-15 rifles, and pump action shotguns, which vary. That's only here where I live though, and I live on the other side of the United States than the Mojave. As far as non lethal goes, in case you wanted something like this, they carry 50,000 volt tasers (not all 50,000 volts are used in subduing the victim, I'm pretty sure that would kill them), pepper spray, and some can carry a pepper ball gun which is basically a paintball gun that fires balls filled with pepper spray. And a bean bag gun, which already exists in New Vegas, if I recall correctly. As far as the Fallout universe, I think your best bet for a normal cop is the 9mm. If you want to include shotguns and such, do so, but try mixing up the ammunition. Shells and bean bags. Normal patrol officers or cops can apply for and use different weapons, police departments like the variety so it isn't usually based on rank. Hope I helped, good luck. Edited April 24, 2012 by xMetalKitten
