Hello there....I have just dowloaded OBSE but I don't know where to install it...I know it's not in the data folder could somebody help? thanks a lot x

OBSE "must" be installed in the game root directory, I mean the one you installed the game (such as .../Oblivion), the same directory where the Oblivion.exe is.

As rule of thumb utilities doesn't follows the mod standards and each one may have particular requests where being installed. Most doesn't even care where they are, once they can "see" the game directory someway.

Do not extract the zipped file directly into the Oblivion folder. That will not work. Create a new folder and extract it there. You should get another folder inside that one called '0015' The files files you need are inside that one. Then follow the author's install instructions.

From the OBSE Install instructions by Ian Patterson and Stephen Abel and Paul Connelly

1. Copy obse_1_1.dll, obse_1_2.dll, obse_1_2_416.dll, obse_editor_1_0.dll, obse_editor_1_2.dll, and obse_loader.exe to your Oblivion directory. This is usually in your Program Files folder, and should contain files called "Oblivion.exe" and "OblivionLauncher.exe".

2. Run oblivion by running obse_loader.exe from the Oblivion directory.

Bben edit: Note there are 6 files - the others are not necessary. They do not go in the \data, but in the Oblivion folder ( C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion)

If you use a desktop shortcut to launch Oblivion normally, just update the shortcut to point to obse_loader.exe instead of oblivion.exe.

bben edit: Are you starting OBSE Before Oblivion?

[ Troubleshooting / FAQ ]

Oblivion doesn't launch after running obse_loader.exe:

- Make sure you've copied the OBSE files to your oblivion folder. That folder should also contain oblivion.exe.

- Check the file obse_loader.log in your oblivion folder for errors.

obse_loader.log tells me it couldn't find a checksum:

- You may have a version of Oblivion that isn't supported. I have the english official patch v1.2.0.416. Localized versions with different executables or different patches may not work, but many have been successful. If there's enough legitimate demand for it, I can add support for other versions in the future.

- Your Oblivion install may be corrupt. Hacks or no-cd patches may also change the checksum of the game, making it impossible to detect the installed version.

The OBSE loader tells me I need to use the autopatcher:

- Go to to OBSE website (http://obse.silverlock.org) and download autopatcher, which will walk you through the update process. You will need the latest patch from Bethesda, as well as your original Oblivion DVD.

OBSE doesn't launch with the Direct2Drive version:

- The Direct2Drive version of the Oblivion executable is compressed and possibly encrypted. This makes it very difficult to support. Whether or not it is supportable in the future is unknown. Apologies.

Crashes or other strange behavior:

- Let me know how you made it crash, and I'll see about fixing it.

What is the 'that file' you can't find? The zipped file? OBSE is delivered in a zipped format and must be unzipped using a compatible unzipping file. Such as 7-zip - available here http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=15579

The easiest way to install 7-zip is to just click on the 7-zip file. it is a self unzipping and self installing program. Allow it to install itself in its default location. That will not be any of the Oblivion folders because it is used for other programs besides Oblivion.

Again, read the readme and follow the directions to use 7-zip.

7-zip will work on just about all zipped type programs, and it's free.

I know how to install and unzip it....I just don't know where to send it to since I can't find the oblivion directory folder that im supposed to copy OBSE into.

Have you an Oblivion icon (shortcut) in desktop?

right click, go to the properties and there click on "Find Target..." just the simpler way, of several, to find something on the HD

If you use the same technique to unzip OBSE0015 that you probably use for mods, it will not work. What you will get is a folder named 0015 and not the files you need.

First, create a NEW folder. Name it OBSE. The simplest place is on your desktop. Download the OBSE0015 into it. then unzip it into the same folder. Open the folder, open the new folder there called 0015. Find the files that need to be copied. There are 6 of them. obse_1_1.dll, obse_1_2.dll, obse_1_2_416.dll, obse_editor_1_0.dll, obse_editor_1_2.dll, and obse_loader.exe. The others are not needed to play.

For Windows XP, Copy the files to: C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion.

For Vista it may be slightly different, but will be similar.

After you have it working, either move the folder you made from your desktop to a different folder or delete it - too many folder on you desktop will slow down loading Windows.
