CTD when loading save games from before Vortex.

Hi.

So Vortex works, but only with new games started and saved through vortex itself.

I cannot get it to work with any of my old saves. It CTDs immediately upon trying to load the previous saves.

What could be causing this?

I cannot answer on getting old mods or saves to work but on your first sentence, yes, the game needs to be started having Vortex on/active.

I made the mistake to start a fresh Skyrim, opened the game icon, set up my options and started the game via game icon without Vortex to be open. Got out of Helgen, save and exit my game. Opened Vortex and started to download all my mods ... surprise !!! ... Vortex did not have any saved game so guess what ? I had to restart the whole thing again because starting Skyrim with mods is a big mistake .... so yes, Vortex needs to be open and you should start your game via SKSE launcher either via Vortex or outside, it does not matter.

No, Vortex does NOT need to be running. Vortex does nothing special when starting a game. The issue you are running into is likely due to your Profile settings. I'm guessing you have the Profile's Game Saves setting set to Yes. This creates a whole new folder for saves that are kept separate from other profiles and vanilla.

Also, it's okay to start Skyrim with some mods active. Mods with scripts are usually the ones you want to avoid.
