I came accross that mod and got me thinking if i need it or not. My game runs fine and it looks beautiful, with all kinds of texture mods. I guess i dont need it, but how do i know for sure? I can post my mod list or my system specs, thanks.

Skyrim is supposed to use 4GB by default now, but it's apparently a little buggy in execution since some people say they crash if they go over 2GB of RAM. If you don't see purple trees or pitch black rocks, and you don't crash, my guess is that you don't need it. Even if you crash at times, it may not be related to RAM. Edited by Rennn

Oh, yeah. I read it like he was asking if he should use a mod to let Skyrim use 4GB. Anyway, Skyrim can't use more than 4GB under any circumstances, but you don't even need a mod for that, etc. Most of my answer still works. You'll almost certainly be fine with just an up-to-date version of Skyrim, since it doesn't sound like you're one of the unlucky few who had their RAM useage break. If that had happened, you'd be crashing, so it's fine. Edited by Rennn

If you have any of the new updates, then your game can already use multiple gigs of memory provided that you have windows XP 64-bit, windows Vista 64-bit, or windows 7 64-bit. However, if you have older versions of the game, 1.3 or older, then I believe a mod will be required. Also, 32-bit windows can only make use of 2 gigs of RAM. 64-bit can make use of 4.

No 32 bit uses up to 4 and 64 bit more than 4. but the program installed needs to be a 64 bit program to use more than 4 gig. Skyrim is a 32 bit program and it doesn't matter if the operating system is 64, it wont use more than 4. The first few versions of Skyrim did not have the correct settings so used only 2 gig of memory.

Probably more info than you really wanted.

TL:DR - The 4G was set in Skyrim by either the second or third patch - you don't need a mod for that any more.

The long explanation

A 32 bit computer can only use a max of 4G of ram. However, A 32 bit program running on a 32 bit computer will not be able to use the full 4G as anything else running on that computer WILL take up a portion of the available RAM. A Windows based 32 bit computer actually cannot use the entire 4G. It is limited to about 3.5G MAX. And could be even less depending on things like your video card. The remaining .5 or so is reserved for other things - such as BIOS, PCI Buss, PCIE support and other stuff that your computer won't run without.

So for a 32 bit system, the most memory that you need is 4G. Anything over that cannot be used either by the game or by the system. Of that 4G, .5 to .75 is reserved and cannot be used by Windows or programs. A minimum Windows install with no uneeded background processes will take up about .3G, Leaving you about 3G for the game. The Windows 32 bit system - by default, only allows any program a max of 2G RAM. The LAA (Large Address Aware - this is the real name of the 4G mod) setting will allow a program to use more RAM, up to whatever is available and marked as free. This can cause problems if Windows suddenly decides it must load something else and exceeds the available ram - Instant crash.

This means that the 4G setting CAN cause more crashes - but it also CAN prevent some kinds of crashes from occurring as often. Your mileage may vary.

For a 64 bit system, the RAM is limited by Skyrim being a 32 bit program and only being able to use 4G max. If you have the LAA Any RAM over 4G can be used for Windows, background programs or even other programs. No matter how much ram you have in a 64 bit machine Skyrim (or any other 32 bit program) cannot use over 4G.

That said, the second or third Skyrim patch set the LAA so you do not need to install it separately.
