I can afford the mortgage, but the Jarls steward(s) won't offer me a house to buy. Ive even killed for them! I got my stuff piling up in the Abandoned Shack where Astrid made me kill for the Dark Brotherhood, but I need a place I can call My hOwn. Ive been to all the holds.....why wont they offer me a house to sell???

Have you hit the trigger points to be allowed to buy property? (Has any Jarl said "you may purchase property in my hold/city"? The trigger for being allowed to buy is different in each city AFAIK).

Sorry if you have, it's just you didn't say you had, and if you haven't it's the most obvious answer. ;)

You need to do a quest for the Jarl and most of the quests are unlocked by doing the main quest i believe, i think killing an NPC should give you the deeds to their house but not the Jarl's steward as someone would notice! :D

Thanks,

I was being polite I guess in the presence of the Jarl. It seemed like I had to talk to the steward first. Damn Him! and Damn my Canadianess! Now I shall go kill for the Jarl!

Yeah you certainly have to talk with the Jarl. Most of the time there are multiple quests you must do, usually a quest for the Jarl and then a few quests for the people of the city. Riften is a little different as you don't start with talking to Jarl (look on the wiki if you want to know) and Windhelm I don't think you can get without doing the civil war.

In fact you can find out anything you want to know about how to get the houses on the wiki. Just look at the "Player Homes" page.

And I thought it was us Brits who did too much of the bowing and scraping and doffing our caps ;)

haha, most of you Brits have spent the last 500 years making sure the rest of the world bowed and scraped to you! unless you are part of the working class lol

Working class kid, and Irish for most of the last 500 years (not me personally, obviously), Ooooh, I'm a scraper, and it's not as tough now as it was when I were a lad. Bowing and scraping, luxury! ;)
