Not sure but I think water damage is a special case of damage that can't be negated by normal resistance type. Weird enough lava is classified as water damage. You must search for more secure information as ain't sure about this and know none application to it, except this can't be used without mods or even if it can be used someway.

Edit: I think it was created so, for example, the lava wouldn't be easily resisted by characters with high fire resistance and if the fire damage was so much strong to bypass this defense it would fry less gifted characters in fraction of seconds. Resuming, is to accomplish more balanced damage, high but not immediate death. The second, more "conventional" use is the drowning, at least I think it is a water damage type too, or hope it is :) The main characteristic seems to it being continual damage over time.

sorry for the double post, but since it is a suggestion over answer is better so than editing the former.

An equivalent of water damage can be accomplished onto an update part of a magic effect script that inflict that continual damage until some condition is satisfied.

thanks i'm thinking of a script that actually uses WATER damege. heeh

well, water breathing is good as defense against drowning... now, to USE water damage effect....

In the drowning there are two phases, the first have an immediate recovering just from breathing again, it doesn't affect the health... the second one is actual continual damage (the one used in lava). I don't think it can be directly used but i may be wrong.

If you manage to achieve post it since is a very good effect to use like in poisoning gases and many other situations. And have a nice gauge bar.

well my water damege effect is supposed to be active when the player is wading in water not just under water

This wouldn't be the water damage. What you seek seems to be a fatigue increase (or stamina loss) or even a cold damage (if the water is supposed freezing). At least I don't think water itself being damaging :)

Assuming a someway damaging water the effect would be pretty like the lava damage, maybe softer. But since I can't help in the "howto" get the water damage effect being directly used the better is to me just follow the thread without more replies.
