Syco21
AliasTheory, don't forget FTL neutrinos! While the results are hotly debated, Personally... That was the big topic in my college quantum mechanics class earlier this year. Didn't the researchers admit that their results were erroneously concluded on their part? Man, if FTL became the new thing to believe, so much of modern physics would have to be rewritten...I don't know, but I know that while they claimed to have replicated the results, another team was unable to do so and as Thor said, it's not looking too particularly good for that particular experiment. HeyYou
^ On a humorous note, yes, they all really seem to just serve as distractions to many of us. But technology is a tool, and it's how you use it. The fact that someone can just hop onto any computer and type up a post or update (or even from a phone) is certainly an accomplishment. Everyone and their dog seems to have a smartphone right now. :P Hmm. Even if we say that the global financial crisis has been around from 2005 to the present, that doesn't leave a lot of room for scientific discovery. I think on average, a good benchmark might be every half a decade or maybe a quarter. It's too soon to tell, perhaps. Also, I remember when thumbdrives were four gigs or eight gigs big and definitely larger... http://i47.tinypic.com/2vwsrh4.jpg I see the world of multi-threading getting some significant advancements in the future. 128 GB thumb drives will be on the market in the next couple weeks....... That's bigger than two out of three of my harddrives.....
Dan3345
Well umm just to name one off the top of my head China has the world only Thorium reactor up and running and they proved it too. Not trying to get too political but I blame the government which for the last 70 years in the US seems to love doing things it shouldn't and in the name of helping us makes things harder for people to work and achieve great things. IndorilTheGreat
How about our advances in human prostheses the past 10 years? We finally have a (semi effective) arm that responds to muscle movement and nerve reactions. Also, the Skylon spacecraft is really fascinating stuff. If this project successfully takes off (no pun intended), the world will shrink even more. Alternative energy sources are popping up all over the planet as well. I believe my teacher said it best: "The Joule is the currency of the future." Achievements and advancements aren't limited to theories and experiments on the atomic level only (although that seems to be a big area right now).
Thor.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LYos3J_8D5Q I am excited for this tech, its going to replace solid booster rockets woot. Edited May 21, 2012 by Thor.
Vagrant0
I think everyone is forgetting the Snuggy. No longer will mankind have to choose between being comfortably warm and able to do things with their hands while sitting. Sure... you may laugh now, but in 50 years think of all the advancements that might have been made possible by this innovation.
billyro
Huh. I read the title and I was expecting to see achievements related to physical extremes, like climbing Mount Everest for the first time. I must be stuck in the past, as those achievements mean nothing nowadays.

I must be stuck in the past, as those achievements mean nothing nowadays. It's not that they don't mean anything, its that there isn't much that hasn't been done in the way of exploration besides space and the deep sea. Don't get me wrong those feats are still amazing and worthy of praise but now that they are more common they aren't as..how should I say this...fantastic? If tomorrow we built a moon base it would be fantastic, because of how much it would cost and how difficult. Hundreds of years from now moon bases might be normal and no one will be so amazed when there are hundreds. Actually come to think of it a better analogy would be underwater hotels..
