Exit Game = Crash

Recommended Posts

Ok first off i dont want the program because im lazy, i want it because every time it crashes and i "have to hit a few keys" my computer locks up and vulks up for several minuets, which is really annoying since i cant even alt+tab the game without periodic crashes either. So exiting the game is annoying and time consuming, and makes it hard to troubleshoot mods with because every time i hit a problem it takes 10 minuets or more to close and reopen the game.

leave stupid comments like that to yourself... were actually trying to fix a problem

Whats helped me in the past with this particular problem is using OBMM to uncheck all my mods and gradually enable them 5 at a time until the game starts getting unstable again, it gives me a better idea of which mod combinations are actually causing it. I'll use Wrye Bash to find any conflicts or the OBMM conflict detector, but often find such methods inconclusive. Most of the time I think it's just that I have too many mods enabled. Sometimes there is a definite culprit. It definitely is a memory problem and the inability of the program to free all that memory before exiting.

A mod called "Streamline" used to make a bit of a difference for me, but I'm not sure it can take all the credit, there may have been a few things I did to help.

As for the CTRL-ALT-Delete thing I'm not aware of such a program, I think if there was it would have similar effects. As the Taskmanager needs to free all that memory before the system can be stable again. If it doesn't take the time to do that, it might corrupt something.

Hope that's been of some assistance.

It's not the memory quantity, the issue is caused by some of the things being released can't go because some other thing depends on it. This is a deadlock of sorts, but this isn't the actual problem here.

I understand the issue being more than the boring more common crash with the message window. The one being reported here is the "freezing" sometimes occurs that prevents most of the times seeing the Task Manager.

I suggest an workaround until the problem cause is detected (if it even will be).

Make sure Oblivion is the only application running, so it is the only that appears in the task manager.

try quiting normally, if it freezes press ctrl+alt+del and so press Alt+E and enter (or better yet, Alt+E again). This must force the Oblivion's shutdown.

  • 3 months later...

I get this problem after a clean install of Oblivion+KotN+SI+1.2.416 and then nothing but OOO 1.33 omod version. Can I change the load order somehow to resolve this? Any tips?

Update: I did some more testing on the load order and found a way to get by this problem. If you have the following two .esp files, make sure they load in this order (relative to each other at least):

Oscuro's_Oblivion_Overhaul.esp

Knights.esp

That solved it for me! Now I can only hope this doesn't screw up OOO's effect on this game element somehow. :)
