How do YOU roleplay...

I've just started role playing in an online game. I have found it both liberating, and quite daunting, emotionally, at the same time. In this particular game, Age of Conan, there are may different servers, most of which are devoted to PVP play, with just a few open to RP-PVP, and even less - like, one- for RP-PVE, which is where i find myself.

While I'm the type of person who likes to amble along smelling the flowers, as it were, most of the people that I come across, even on the RP-PVE server, tend to keep their heads down and concentrate on levelling up, gaining experience points. I've seen plenty of debate about it on the Conan forums, with the usual argument being that people just want to get through the early tutorial stage and then they might start really roleplaying.

Seems to me that there is a flaw in that sort of logic. Why choose to inhabit a world - a very attractive world in the case of Conan - and then choose to ignore the wonderful ambience one finds oneself in? And miss out on the opportunity to get stuck in meeting, and interacting with, other human beings from the git go. At any one time while i'm playing, i'm the only one who knows that there is an elephant in the local pub, just as a for instance. Just what magical transformation do people think is going to take place that will make them suddenly good at RP'ing when they are 'out ' in the greater game world?

I was just curious as to how other folks who play these kinds of games go about it.

My answer probably won't matter much, since I only play online games when I go to my friend's house, but I like to concentrate on leveling up first, and once I'm not in danger of being killed by a stray rat, I slow down and start adventuring more.

For most of the tutorial I just run around completing quests, and maybe gathering a party of fellow adventurers. Once I'm out of the tutorial, however, I like to just explore, even though it's dangerous with all the annoying creatures wandering around.

Really, I tend to use roleplaying in games like Oblivion, and sometimes when playing a co-op with my brother on Warcraft III or a game like that.

sorry, Aerin, for being vague..but are you playing conan? Or are we talking about online rp games in general? And never think that your answer doesnt matter much. The post count to this thread just went up 100% because of you! Hah.

No, I don't play Conan. I play Lord Of The Rings Online at my friends house. My parents refuse to pay for a monthly subscription game like that, so I can't play online games at my own house.

Aerin... here's a little roleplay for ya: behave in such a way that your parents will insist on you spending more time at home, and will be willing to bribe you with the price of a monthly sub to online game of your choice. Oh...wait a minute...you already do. Are your parents just not paying attention , or what? <laughing out loud gif >.

I already tried bribing them. They won't do it. So that's why I play it at my friend's house.

Aerin...your being ostensibly under your parents thumb would suggest to me that you might not be old enough to play Conan anyway. Though that doesnt seem to have stopped a lot of people ive come across already. Pity that you cant. The RP server needs in yer face anarchic people like you! At least here in the UK.

Mostly i seem to come across little boys who are playing as skinny big chested girls, and who have no idea of how to roleplay, other than to try to stab me with what ever weapon they're wielding at that moment. Which is doubly pathetic because it's a PVE server in which you cant harm other pc players. At least i have the consolation of not being stabbed by 'male' toons. :whistling:

I think that most people get onto a RP site, and then sort of freeze. They just cannot seem to make the leap required of them to get with the character they have created.

I can understand that in the context of being asked to do something in public, in life. I myself suffer terribly from 'stage fright'. But, as i indicated in my original post, this whole RP, as an annonymous person, online, is quite liberating, if people would only give it a chance.

BTW, Aerin... am enjoying this semi-private chat room we have set up here. How many posts can we do before someone breaks in, do you think? ( did someone just throw down a challenge? )

Guessing my age now, are you? Well, you're a hell of a lot closer than other people have been.

Even if I was allowed to play Conan, I wouldn't, because it's a sexual and violent game, and I much prefer running around with little Hobbit boys.

I've been roleplaying for a long time, but online games just aren't my thing. LOTRO is probably the only online game I'd like to play.

You suffer from stage fright? I don't. Never have. I've been in several plays, and I've only frozen up a few times. I agree with you, though. Talking to people online instead of face-to-face is easier than it is in real life. You can say what you want to say without worrying about what other people might think.

The gauntlet has been thrown down. Cheesiest line ever. If someone intrudes, we can kick them out with our awesomeness.

Well Aerin...when you get as jaded as i am, hobbits just dont cut it anymore. Hah. And something tells me that we arent actually supposed to discourage people from posting to threads. Would be a novel thread starter's technique, though, i'll give you that.

Even tho, as you say, Conan has its blood and sexual content ( btw, doesnt Oblivion? ) the sex thing can be entirely ignored, as it is just suggestive plot lines...well, so far. Many people are really into the lore of the stories behind Conan, just as some are about Tamriel lore. Mutli level stuff going on.

I, being rather dim, and lazy, am pretty well into the sex and violence. So far...i'm doing just fine at the violence.

Cheesiest line ever? Sounds like you got an idea for your own thread, there, Aerin.

But when hobbits give you presents so you can buy a big house, then it's nice. Silly hobbits. Elf girls would never date little men like that.

Oblivion has blood, but it can be moderated to a degree. The sexual content in Oblivion is pretty much integrated through mods, unless you find running around in cardboard underwear sexually appealing.

I don't make threads, I kill them before they even have a chance to start. Poor, poor me. The best topic I ever had was when I created an 'I hate you' game topic on a different site. That one was relatively popular. Me and some friends bashed on the newbies hard.

Good times.

oh, ha ha, an 'I hate you' thread, and...you bashed the newbies...hard...ha ha...ha ha ha...<whispers: is there any body else there... anybody at all...?>

Aerin, you would be surprised how many tall, languid women go for little men with hairy toes. Being neither, i dont get it myself. But i think that money is very attractive on little men. And as to Oblivion's cardboard underwear, you just have to wait for the rains. Then that stuff just disintegrates. And that can be sexy.

I am now officially 3/4s asleep. If you're still there ,Aerin, i leave this thread in your capable hands until sometime tommorrow. Oh yeah... just work the words ' role' and 'play' into a sentence now and then. Just for form's sake,of course. Ciao.
