Trying to install a new hair mod?

Please see the 'Issue: Body Replacer - Custom Hair, Eyes, Heads, and/or Races' and other 'Issue: Body Replacer -" entries under the 'Solutions to Graphics problems' section in the wiki "Fallout NV Mod Conflict Troubleshooting" guide.

Once you read that, basically you need to switch to the vanilla hairstyle, save, removed the old hair mod and 'clean save' (see the 'Clean Saves' section of the wiki "FNV General Mod Use Advice" article), and then add the replacement mod.

I tried that but upon entering my save (swapped to vanilla hair, then I saved and exited and uninstalled the old one) it's like my character is in the ground and invisible. Pulling up the pip-boy shows nothing, no pip boy at all. Trying to enter a console command is no good either.

Edit: I just don't get it. I made a clean save, I followed the uninstall instructions, etc.....but it won't let me get rid of this mod! I have to work early tomorrow. I hope somebody can help me get to the bottom of this

I really doubt you are going to solve this tonight. You've already tried the straight forward method and it didn't go well. Trying to rush things only tends to make matters worse.

When you say you were able to change the hairstyle to "vanilla", how did you go about it?

Let's clarify a couple of things. When you managed to give the character a vanilla hair style, you stopped having the old hair mod in control. That should mean: you could carry on playing with that vanilla hairstyle. You should do this at least long enough to confirm things are working correctly before you attempt to install the replacement hair mod.

When you "clean save" you are purging the mod's files from the "save game". But that alone does not restore any vanilla files that got overwritten by the mod, and removing any mod is always a risk to your current game. It is not advisable because you do not know just what else beyond the obvious is involved (such as "quest scripts") and now "broken". Uninstalling the mod itself may or may not (depending upon your "mod manager") restore any vanilla files the mod may have overwritten.

So that is one step, and from the sound of things that worked correctly but it had an unexpected impact on "collision" causing your character's body to drop below ground level. You should be able to enter the console and use the TCL command to toggle off collision and to move the character above ground before toggling it back on so the character drops back to ground level. If you can't enter the console, then you have to "verify local files" to get back some vanilla files.

If that doesn't work to give you back access to the console, then you basically need to uninstall and reinstall again. Maybe you can then resume play from the point of the "clean save", and maybe not. But the problem with the console is not directly linked to the hair mod.

Validated files, launched into my clean save without the hair mod (character wearing vanilla hairstyle applied via "showbarbermenu") and my character is invisible and beneath the floor. Using the TCL command only allows me to go up, and swapping between 1st and 3rd person has no difference.

Edit 2: Long story short, I'm new to NV modding. Very new. What I'm trying to do is take the hair from this mod: https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/62744?tab=description

and add it to this one: https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/35878?tab=files
(as the author of Megaton hairs suggested).

Problem is I just downloaded the geck and watch an installation tutorial. I have no idea how to use this. I'm in this situation because I have little free time and I didn't take the time needed to look at the hair mod I truly wanted. While getting all the grunt work done and installing my mods, I only installed Mikoto's bc another one suggested it.
I never anticipated it being this big of a hassle. Simply clean saving and uninstalling doesn't work as upon loading the clean save, my character is invisible, and beneath the ground. I'm stuck with this mod until somebody can please help me.

Final EDIT: I was able to talk to the Mod Author of Megaton hairs. He taught me how to add them to Mikoto's pack.

Body/hair replacement is not something someone brand new to modding a game should attempt. It's a complex issue as you have discovered. It needs some time spent reading up on the issues and an understanding of what the instructions are trying to tell you. (Mod creators and programmers in general are notorious for hating to write up documentation and often make unspoken assumptions.). The longest threads on Nexus are almost exclusively related to such "cosmetic" mods as fresh generations of players wrestle with them.

Being stuck in the ground like that usually happens if you uninstall/disable the race that your character is set to, trying to use the showracemenu console command here will probably crash the game, reinstall and enable whatever mod contains the race you were playing, then use showracemenu to switch to something else before removing it again. I don't know if this will help but I wrote a guide on custom race creation that covers adding hairs to races, it's here https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/images/102834

Oh, shucks and stuff! I even have the PDF version of that guide linked in the wiki "Getting started creating mods using GECK" article under "Custom NPCs", but never thought to add it to the "Troubleshooting" guide. In there now under 'Issue: Body Replacer - Custom Hair, Eyes, Heads, and/or Races' as the second cause of problems. Thanks.

I wonder if player.setrace would work instead of reenabling the mod? the chargen thing showracemenu brings up sets itself to the race the player character is set to, the crash might be caused by that race not being present, setrace would get around that.
