SapphireGaming33
I just started using LOOT for Skyrim and without even adding any mods, I see that Dawnguard.esm, HearthFires.esm, Dragonborn.esm, and Update.esm(still not sure what this one is for, if anyone cares to explain) all have 50+ ITM records(as well as deleted references and deleted navmeshes) yet Skyrim.esm has none of these. Will these ever be a problem or are they safe to clean out? I also am wondering as to why these are even on a completely vanilla games master files. thumbincubation
Because Bethesda did sloppy work. Here's a link to the thread on how to clean your master files. (Update through Dragonborn). Don't clean Skyrim itself. https://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/5381485-guide-manual-cleaning-skyrim-and-skyrim-special-edition-master-files/

A big problem? A small problem?
WastelandAssassin
first of all , it's obvious why Skyrim.esm doesn't have theseITM stands for Identical To Master , and in the case of the DLCs the master in question is Skyrim.esm . so these are basically records in the DLC plugins that exist in Skyrim.esm . that's all this is as for Update.esm , it's a master plugin that comes with the game . not sure what it contains , but you should just consider it as Skyrim.esm part 2 . you could check what it contains in TES5Edit , though it really shouldn't matter . sorry that I don't have a better answer on that , don't recall anyone ever asking this question generally speaking , it is recommended to clean the DLC masters for Skyrim . it's really not a complicated process (should take around 5-10 minutes tops if you follow the guide properly) , so there is no real reason not to do ityou don't have to do so , though I'm not sure what kind of problems could occur if you choose not to clean these (I doubt it'll be anything major though)just be sure to follow the guide properly , as you really don't want to mess it up (and I would really recommend to back up those plugins before cleaning them , just in case)
wfandrews
If you are not going to mod your game there is really no need to clean those files, unless you are pressed for space on your hard drive. If you are going to mod your game it would be a good idea to clean them, and the heavier the mod load the better the idea. As has been said it really is not a complicated process. Just click on the link provided and follow the instructions.
SapphireGaming33
Thanks, though concerning the guide at https://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/5381485-guide-manual-cleaning-skyrim-and-skyrim-special-edition-master-files/ I do have some problems. I have followed through with the guide exactly, but the second I do apply filter for cleaning on Update.esm, almost every other esm file is highlighted and colored red, I assume this is a problem however I do not know. WastelandAssassin
you aren't following the guide if you see thiswhen you are cleaning the masters , you are supposed to do that one at a timethis means that you should only load the specific master you are going to clean (disable all other plugins , it will automatically enable Update.esm and Skyrim.esm)so if you are cleaning Dawnguard.esm , make sure that no other plugin is selected as for the highlight , it's supposed to be red (this means that there are conflicts that requires cleaning)
wfandrews
Are you right clicking in the middle pane and then selecting none? You then should select update.esm, click ok let it run, right click on it and click "apply filter for cleaning". Make sure you only have the one file selected when you apply filter for cleaning. After you apply filter for cleaning wait for it to stop processing and you should only have three files showing; Skyrim.esm, Skyrim.exe, and Update.esm.Update.esm will be green and the other two files light gray. Right click on Update.esm and select what you want to do; Clean ITM's or UDRs. Do not worry about the colors as for what you are doing they have no meaning.
