Random Crash/stop when walking around the wilderness.

yet another problem from Skyrim with me (seems like I spend more time fixing and finding problems than I do just playing the damn thing... :facepalm: :wallbash: )

 

Basically I'll be walking/riding around the wilderness, and then, randomly, without warning, the game will simply freeze - dead, can't access menus, save, console commands etc, it just stops.

 

Now it always happens in the same area, the current place for e.g. is going on the road out of riverwood toward the guardian stones, just past where the wolves attack you in a curve in the road which goes and and to the left (although it has happened before in other places). One thing I've noticed about said areas is that they (generally) have quite a bit of foliage around, and occassionally some water - the same with the current area where this is happening. I also use a couple of enhancer mods, such as WATER and Realistic lighting/Ultra Realistic lighting (i've got Ultra installed at the minute) but I get exactly the same problem in exactly the same area with both. - I've also heard that Beth recently released a patch (1.5?) which messes these things up and causes random CTDs, some of which I have experienced, so I dunno if that's the cause.

 

My computer runs skyrim on the low end of things - it says the recommended settings are medium, however works kinda...jumpy (I'm not very technical so that's as much as I can say really) so I've stuck it on low with some slight changes (water reflects land etc) to get it to run smoothly but to my liking. As far as I know (again I'm not too technical) it also meets the requirements to play skyrim, the only thing that's slightly off is my computer processor - it's a triple core one, rather than double (the minimum), or quad-core (the recommended), so I dunno if that has something to do with it, but as I say Skyrim works fine and smooth as long as I keep stuff like AA turned off.

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The first thing I would do is make sure that WATER is dead last in your load order. The problem happens to me just as you describe it if WATER is ever moved up, even 1 or 2 slots. The author recommends last, but BOSS always wants it to be father up. Also I'd run BOSS (or some other ordering program) just to make sure you're optimal.

 

If that doesn't work...what is your graphics card and VRAM? How much CPU RAM?

There are some tweaks that I have used in my crappy 512VRAM card that help, especially in places like riften that tend to go slow, but I'd try the WATER thing first.

Unsurprisingly however, just as I said in my OP...another problem has arisen of a different nature this time - basically I'm doing the first quest when you join the college of winterhold, and I've got to the bit where you listen to the wizard talk about safety etc etc, all goes fine up untill the point at which he is supposed to ask the player what they should do, at which point he just stops, and it says he's busy. I've had a similar problem with a companion quest before too, with the funeral bit and then nothing happening, and to be honest I'm getting pretty sick of having to use console commands to fix these bloody things - any suggestions? I can't see how my mods could be messing with this sort of thing to be honest... (I've got graphic enhancer mods, combat realism mods, blood colour mods, AP for you know... realism... :whistling: and other stuff like wild horses and lions, as well as extra spells...) I honestly can't see what's causing these things, unless it's Skyrim itself, which to be honest with the number of bugs and issues I've had with this and both FO3 and FONV (although much less in those two than Skyrim) I probably wouldn't put it past Beth to release games full of bugs.

 

...I'm kinda pissed off right now so apologies if I've ranted, but yeah, any suggestions on how to get past this thing?
