GothicNicki
This is the second time my current game has experienced CDT crashes. I have had others, but those i put down to the length my game has been running and has over loaded things. This CTD Crash has happened at almost the same type of point, first time I was near Hurbis Comics; now it seems to take place close to Listening Post Bravo. I fixed it first time by dropping one of the mods i thought to be overloading the game and loaded a save from before i started the mod. I now think it might be more level based as it is happening when i am level 32. here is my mod list. jones177
Hi As a save gets older it requires more resources. The saves age is a bigger factor in stability than the duration played. My saves are basically CTD free up to about level 30. At level 70 CTDs are about every 4 hours. At level 130 they are about every 2 hours. As we play we add more content requiring more resources. Even the content we add by modding Skyrim/SE is miniscule compared to what we do to Fallout 4. Only my level 30 saves are playable on the hardware that I used when the game came out(i7 2600k). My level 130 saves need a i7 8700k to be playable. They are slowly becoming unplayable as saves get older & I add more content. I am at the point now that I need hardware that is not on the market yet to improve the games performance on older saves. Also CTDs can get into a save. I have character save that CTDs 90% of the time when approaching Hangman's Alley. Any saves done in Hangman's Alley will be corrupted. It is the only save that has this issue.I had another save that would CTD after 10 seconds. If my character could get to the next cell in the 10 seconds the CTD could be avoided. To be on the safe side I went back several levels before the CTD. I still play the save & I have not had a CTD in that area since. There may be nothing wrong with your game. You may have modded past the point where it is unstable at level 32 on your current hardware. My solution was to play a save until it got just about unplayable. I then shelved it & started a new character save. When I did a CPU upgrade I played the saves I shelved before the upgrade. This year I have been playing the character saves I started when the game came out. None of them were played in 2017. At first I play them a 4k resolution but at some point I move them to a computer that has a 3440X1440 screen. I continue playing them until the i7 8700k can no longer handle the content. With the new character saves I have started & the old character saves I have left I am good to the end of the year. At that point I will need a CPU much more powerful than my i7 8700k & i7 8086k if I want to continue playing my really old saves. Later
bajs11
"At first I play them a 4k resolution but at some point I move them to a computer that has a 3440X1440 screen. I continue playing them until the i7 8700k can no longer handle the content." at 4K or even 1440p isn't the GPU usually the bottleneck? also why does this game require the 8700K at higher levels? I mean sure there are more crap in the save file but aren't they usually handled by the GPU? Edited August 9, 2018 by bajs11
jones177
Hi At its heart Fallout 4 is a CPU game just like Skyrim, Fallout 3 & Oblivion. GPUs need to be fed by the CPU. If the CPU is stressed, GPU performance suffers. Using Fallout 4 Performance Monitor I know that if my CPU usage on a 6 core stays around 17% my game will run smoothly everywhere. With a 4 core the usage is around 25%. Above these numbers the frame rate starts to drop. As long as the frame rate is above 60fps I am happy. On my i7 6700k the worst parts of Boston would have 46% CPU usage. On my i7 2600k usage was around 54%. This was not enough to drop my frame rate below 60fps so Boston has never been issue to me. Boston is a CPU hit. All the low spots in my game are where the settlements load in. The only exception is between Oberland Station and Hangman's Alley on the road just past the red semi trailer under the bridge. This area is a GPU hit. In that area if the frame rate drops below 50fps I know it is time to drop the resolution. Only my level 70 and above saves have drops below 60fps in that area. My game needs a i7 8700k or better because to make the game still fun after all these years it needs to be extreme. I play with between 3 & 5x NPCs. So instead of being attacked 5 gunners I get attacked by 15 to 25 gunners. That is vanilla spawns. I then add over a thousand new spawn points though mods that add even more NPCs. The most dangerous spawns are the flying bugs and feral ghouls. Their count can reach up to 60 and if I can't reach higher ground like a two story building I am dead. Also I use 4 or 5 followers that can heal me with stimpacks when I go down(if they can reach me). All this requires a high IPC(instructions per cycle) CPU. I am currently using a i7 8086k overclocked to 5ghz on all cores & that is not enough. Later
Undeadbob666
While this won't solve all your issues with CTDs and big load orders (I try to stay at 249 or less plug-ins), this mod actually helped me get through boston a little bit longer: https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/26286. Also this one caches the ini https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/33947 (since apparently fallout loads and unloads its ini's, even on vanilla, numerous times) so that it will make the game load faster, it does say it only helps the game start but I think it works when you use allot of mods. Hope these help out, its helped me out with CTDs. Also there was this program that allows you to run the programs you want, and shuts down all the non essential processes from running in the background, but I cannot recall its name since I never really got it. Maybe someone else can translate my ramblings about it?
