Kulharin
Balancing performance vs aesthetic what is sweet spot for a GTX 1060 with 6 gigs of VRAM or can I go for 4k for everything? Or should I mix and match based on whether or not it is an animated npc model, landscape, static model, particle effects, etc? Thanks Edited August 20, 2018 by Kulharin
QuagaarWarrior
You cant really go wrong with 2k. I use 4k because im stupid like that. As you suggest a good compromise is to use 4k textures on large objects like mountains. Less need to use 4k textures on smaller objects like food and drinkAlso worth considering how many examples of a texture will be in an area at once for example rustic clothing 4k looks great but if you are also adding alot of NPCs to the game that will increase the strain
shamiro1
Don't use 4K textures if your monitor is not 4K. Simple as that, I'd say if you're on gtx1080 and got monitor supporting 4096x2160 go for it. As a graphics card 1060 6gb is capable of running 4k, but really quite unimpressive with that at all...on the other hand even if you don't have 4k monitor you can install 4k textures, but you are not going to get the best out of it. Kulharin
One thing I don't really get is "4k compressed diffuse and 2k normal maps"
QuagaarWarrior
Just think of it as a compromise between 4k and 2k where the quality is closer to 4k but with performance impact nearer to 2k
