XDLOL1337
Hi im having some problem loading Skyrim mods. When I click the Data files in the launcher a window pops up but nothing shows up in it! No mods, not even the original skyrim.esm and update.esm. I have tried almost everything, I have looked in all the .ini files to see if there is a path setting or something. I have tried to move the Skyrim folder around to different locations. First I tried to move it to the desktop, this didn't work, and I couldn't even start Skyrim because the launcher would just restart when I clicked play. I tried to move it to program files, same thing. The only way I could start Skyrim through the launcher was if I had it in C:\Skyrim... This probably has something to do with my computer privileges so maybe the mods loading problem has too. I am an administrator so it shouldn't be a problem, but I have tried to run the launcher as admin and I have tried unchecking the read-only box for the Data folder and even for the whole Skyrim folder. I have tried to turn off my firewall and my anti-virus program. I have windows 7 32-bit, and I have a retail physical box copy of Skyrim, so no steam. Any one have any ideas to how I can solve this? Thanks :)

XDLOL1337
Skyrim only runs through steam. Yeah, but I meant I have the box version, and didn't buy it through steam

bben46
When you install the box version of Skyrim, it forces you to create a steam account to register the game AND download the latest patch. There is no other legal place to do this. Then every time you start Skyrim (Unless you have set it to offline mode) it calls home to Steam and verifies that your game is up to date. In order for steam to allow your game, you must allow it to install the steam client first. If you don't have the steam client, then many of the things we tell you to do for troubleshooting will not work because they assume steam is there. The proper path for installing is (Wherever you installed steam then the install path - mine is C:\Games\steam\steamapps\common\skyrim. The first part - C:\Games\ may be diferent depending on where you install the steam client - the default if you don't specify something else is C:\Program Files (x86). However, The program files (x86) folder is protected by Windows UAC and that can (but may not - depending on other settings) block some changes to the game - like mods. IF you have a stolen copy, then all bets are off - We cannot help you because we have no clue what you really have. And, we do not help pirates. Who knows what those pirates did to the game to get it to work on their systems - many pirated versions will have problems with mods, cannot be reliably patched and may even have malware included. - you get what you paid for. The legal version using steam is always up to date, the mods actually work, the utility programs such as SKSE and NMM work - and you get FREE help when you have a problem because we know what you have. TLDR: If you don't use steam for Skyrim, please don't waste our time with your problem.Because without steam, we don't know either.
