Can't Swim - Fallout 4 PC

I have a glitch or bug that has just popped up in my game about two weeks ago. At first, I was ready to blame my set up. Maybe my mods and/or load order, BUT I have 4 old characters that I have many hours of play time on and they have worked just fine. Swimming has not been a problem for them. I thought I would create a new character and try a playthrough with a different approach to the game. Well, that is when I acquired this glitch where the character cannot swim. They walk on the water as the water is vibrating and bouncing around as soon as they get just below waist deep in the water. I have tried to create 5 different characters this last two weeks and all of them have the same problem. I have tried uninstalling a few mods that I thought could be causing the issue but have not had any in game results. I have been searching all over the forums and have come up with no resolution to this problem. Does anyone have a clue as to what is going on and how to solve it?

One way to test if it's a mod is to do the following:

  • Disable all plugins (except the vanilla ones) in NMM
  • Load an existing save, click OK to the prompt saying that files are missing, see if it does the same thing
  • Load a new character, see if it does the same thing

If either the 2nd or 3rd step works, then it's 100% being caused by a mod. If not, then it's something else - perhaps a video driver issue

Thank you Omegacron! I had tried both of those steps with no results but not both at the same time. You are a gentleman and a Scholar. So, what do you think the chances are of saving my last created character. He did not respond when I eliminated all of the mods. I still think it is quite strange that my older characters are not affected by this conflict. Such is gaming. Again, thank you for leading me in the right direction. I have been struggling with this for going on three weeks now. This is one lesson I will not forget. You have made my weekend!

This is what I have done:

  1. Disabled all plugins (except the vanilla ones) in NMM
  2. Created a new character
  3. Enabled all of the plugins as I had them previously

This new character seems to be running fine.

I tried playing my last created character that is at level 94. He still cannot swim. What I do not understand is why the oldest character at level 98 is not affected by this. They all have the same mods and load order. Any suggestions? It just seems not to be a mod conflict.

The characters that cannot swim, are they unable to do so in any form of clothing and even naked? Seems to be an issue of mesh collision. Water normally doesn't have collision added so you can pass through it. Except when there's something with the character/wearables that collides with the water meshes.

With the characters that cannot swim, have you tried using the TCL (toggle clipping) console command?

I finally found the culprit. Omegacron was right. 100% mod issue. JimmyRJump is also in the right direction. It was hard to find the mod conflict because it did not show up when the mod was activated. The minute I changed my test character’s cloths, by accident, is when the problem started. It is a set or armor added by that mod along with all these fun things so it doesn’t show up until you use that set of armor. I have used this mod for a long time with no problem until the mod author updated and added new items.

After uninstalling that mod all seems to be fine except for a previously created character. I must have started this character before the mod update. After the uninstall of the mod this character still cannot swim. Is there hope in salvaging this character, or is this character’s save corrupt now, never to be recovered?

I know nothing of the TCL console command and how it works but I will investigate it ASAP.

Thanks to both of you on this matter.

TCL is often used in combination with TFC (toggle free camera) and TM (toggle menu) to take clean screenshots while having a free floating view where there isn't any colliding with ojects. It's also very handy when your character gets stuck somewhere. TCL will allow you to float through objects to get unstuck instead of having to go to an earlier save.
