Fourth Time I've Reinstalled the Game

you know you can backup all the files right, so you never need to download it again, you can simply extract the backup files back into the original location. takes awhile, but we still be much quicker then having to re-download from steam every time.

example: backing up and and adding all files to a zip archive, can compress at 20 MB/s, where as downloading on a 100 mb connection is like 12 MB/s - so if you connection is less then 100 Mb then compressing will be much better anyway.

so yea. delete all mods, and backup your entire fallout 4 directory, then place it somewhere else. then when you want to start fresh, unpack all your fallout 4 files and place them back into their fallout 4 steam location. (just keep the compressed archive somewhere else, preferably on a different harddrive is applicable)

so technically reinstalling fallout 4 again will go from 3 hours to just 30 minutes, as extracting files is far quicker then downloading files. example on my machine i can extract files at 200 MB/s, which is like 20x faster then i can download them.

as long as you don't uninstall fallout 4 in steam you will be good to go.

it will be extremely quick if you happen to have a SSD

Doesn't really match up with your previous topic where you said:

"I've had a lot of fun playing with mods. Some are really good, even essential."

And where you addressed a problem you had regarding loading times on cell change.

I grant you that it can take time to have everything you want run smoothly but if it does, it's awesome. Had to reinstall myself a few weeks back but now my game is tweaked just right and all mods are behaving like they should. It's best to take things one step at a time. As soon as you run into a problem with mods, ask for help here or look up some guides on performance tweaking, load orders, etc. and always read the descriptions of mods and check for any requirements. Once you get the hang of the right way to mod FO4 it becomes less of a hassle. Never assume that every mod out there is plug and play.

Another tip would be keeping an archive of all mods you have installed in another directory. I save and unpack all mods first in an external location so I can see what files it adds or replaces, giving you manual control and also teaching you about file structure and the way mods work.

So why exactly did you have to reinstall 4 times? What was your exact issue? It could have been something much easier to solve than with reinstalling.

Stuff like posting the contents of your plugins.txt file would help a lot to give you advice on your mod choice / load order, etc.

After the second time of d/l'ing the game, I did make a backup. So that is not a fair complaint on my part.

I've had a particularly nasty problem. Show-stopper. There is a dead spot around Greenetech. If I approach from any angle to within about 100 yards, the game crashes. I've been trying to figure out which mod was doing that. (The original game is ok.) I've come to no conclusion as yet. It seems to take until level 40 or so to manifest.

And then there's exiting a building. The last time I exited park st station (exit nearest vault entrance), it took 0:06:37. I've reduced my graphic options to the lowest levels; ensured I'm using no 4K mods, including the DLC. The game, when detecting my graphics card, sets it at Ultra. I suppose because of my NVIDIA 980 Ti. So, what else can I do to stop this 6 minute exit time?

Using any scrapping mods?

Lot of them break the precombined meshes the games uses in order to work, which results in a heavy workload in built up areas like downtown.

Heavily scripted mods, or ones that dramatically alter the leveled/spawn lists might also have an impact, as the games runs through/loads the additional material.

Try this:

on the ground (near the river) determine the EXACT place of the crash. Savegame. Turn around. Face DOWN at the ground. Move backward past the “crash threshold” while looking down at the ground. Once in, then you can turn around. Apparently exiting this bad “cell” does not crash the game (only entering).

- Apparently it's worked for some people, can't confirm myself since I've not had any issues in that part of town.
