If you have been going through Skyrim, installing/un-installing mods for a while with your current save game, chances are they are finally breaking the game down. I personally would suggest starting a new game with the major mods you are sure you want to play with. I had done the same things, and recently it had seemed that CLARALUX and Lanters were messing with Realistic Lighting. When I did what the OP said to do and enable the papyrus log, I found a crap ton of erroes. I mean a crapton, I couldn't post the log on this site or through a PM if I wanted to lol! So, I reinstalled Skyrim, and selected my most favorite mods. I tried cutting back on some, but I am a mod junkie so that didn't work out too well lol. I recommend using the Mod Organizer here on the Nexus. It allows for some really cool stuff, and really good control with what mods you install. It does require you to read a lot, and to get a good understanding of how it works. Too many people take mods for granted, and think that everything should work perfectly. WRONG. Once you install a mod, you taking a risk that said mod will cripple your game. You need to check files, read instructions, go through the comments section and see what other users are saying or are experiencing( but do not take their word for it! Many people run into issues and immediately blame a mod for their issues, when most of the time it is user error! Don't be one of those people! ) When updating mods, always go over the description page and readme for instructions and see if you need to do a clean install or if you just plug and play! Yes this is all very time consuming, but if you don't want to do it, then don't *censored* when s*** hits the fan( not refering to anyone here, but there have been issues with really amazing mod authors and retarded users who drive those authors away because of stupidity on the user part )! I also recommend the Skyrim Configurator here on the Nexus. Allows for really easy and good customization with a helpfull GUI. And while I am at it, I also recommend getting the STEP guide here on Nexus as well. Has some great instructions and how-to's. Remember that mods that run by scripts are likely to leave nasties in save game if not properly uninstalled, or they just might do that anyways cause of how the mod works.

They have the 1.5 beta version up to fix the various issues that 1.6 produced, such as the vanilla npc dialouge bug which can lead to broken quests. It is a must!

Found the reason for my crashes... Textures, when I set them to High, my game crashes, when I set them to medium, no problem... No idea why, I can crank up every other settings to high except textures. Weird.

EDIT: This will only work with a new game as the psc's are hardcoded into a save game when you start

PSC's are Papyrus Script source Files used by the CK for some reason those scripts are causing CTD's but the game does not need them those PSC's can be moved to a temp folder when playing and if you use the CK you can move them back. I have used this procedure and nothing breaks in game by not having those PSC's in the data\scripts\source folder. PEX is the compiled scripts PSC's are the Script Source.

 

And doing that will not cause CTD's

 

Actually what I do is move the entire source folder to another location when playing and have had nothing break in game.

Ok, so a new thing is going on. I have a really funky Papyrus log and was wondering if you can take a look at it. This specific crash is happening once I enter Bleak Falls Sanctum. I shoot an arrow at a wall, but when I try picking it up, I instantly CTD.

EDIT: It seems that my .ini had reverted to some old defaults. Fixed the issue. Am going to restart with new game to be safe as well.

Just one (probably) stupid question, guys: why should we treat exterior CTDs differently from interior CTDs?..

 

I'm no PC wizzard though I can pretty much find my way around a lot of problems, but I'm absolutely not familiar with game scripts. And I have both kinds of CTDs: random exterior no error CTDs (just riding on a road) as well as CTDs when I try to enter a cell I already cleared before, such as a mine or a house (on top of many Vanilla house cells not loading properly). Cells I have not explored yet seem to be ok so far. Tweaking my settings (shadow, textures, light, etc.), waiting for 10 in-game days or verifying cache integrity makes no difference. And I never used heavy scripted mods, most of my mods now are down to armor ones, and some AI enhancing mods (such as AFT) that never made me crash before in the several months I used them.

 

PS: for those who may have encountered the same problem around Sanuarach mine in the Reach, I just found out these CTDs were caused by some Vanilla NPCs, the mercenaries you are quested to drive off the mine to be precise. For some reason, passing them by when they are outside the mine can make you CTD. The cure to that is to simply wait till they are gone for good.

Well, there are a whole slew of different issues. Many problems result in CTDs, doing this step is one of of attempting to find out what is causing it. Script mods usually pose a problem with save games if they are uninstalled, or installed incorrectly. The game will try and call the scripts in the save game you are loading even if you uninstall the mod. It is one of those things that is just how Skyrim handles things. I am no expert in telling you why such things happen, but I have just found out different things with my time playing Skyrim that are issues, and can cause issues. One issue that can cause both interior and exterior CTDs is having too many quest/town addition/ new land mods. Skyrim's game engine has a limit to how many of these it can process, and when you are dangerously close, you might start experiencing missing static pieces all over the place, such as land, houses, water, etc. Not saying that those symptoms are all directly associated with that one issue, but that is usually what it is. There is just a lot you have to watch out for when introducing mods into your game. If a mod usues a script, your safest bet would be to start a new game with it. If you are putting it into your current playthrough, make back up saves and put them in a different location so you do not accidentley overwrite them and so you can label them properly.

Thanks for replying!.. Yeah, I suspected too many quests activated might be one of my problems here (not more than 12 or 15 though) when Riften thieves started to spawn in Riverwood, so I've started clearing some of them... that's if the game lets me enter the corresponding cells though. It'll take me a little while to verify that.

 

Whenever I try some script mod, I usually start with a clean save - and if i uninstall that mod, I erase all saves I made with that mod activated and go back to my clean save before I keep on playing. Logics tells me that should be enough to prevent ghost scripts to linger in my saves, but I've found out at my expenses that what seems logical to me is not always logical to my computer... :rolleyes:

No problem. Haha, I just recently had this issue happening as well. Do you by chance use WyreBash and/or SkyBash?

 

That is a great practice, and in theory, and all logic, this should be enough for keeping your save games free. I like to keep little text logs which tell me what mods I had at the time of the save game( although, I use Mod Organizer which does this for me ).
