Deleted800173User
Okay so long story short, I've been modding for a while now, (I worked on mods back in oblivion), and I've never successfully finished making a mod. I'm still trying to make mods though, so I've got the passion, but its just a daunting task. I have the skills but still completing a mod seems like too much. So I'm looking for some advice on this. Here's a few questions:1 - Should I try to make smaller quest mods before really trying to work steady on a large quest? 2 - Should I join a team of people working on a mod? (I've tried this before but it feels like I get no direction when I join) 3 - Does anyone else experience this kind of modding stress? Any advice is welcome :3 Edited June 19, 2012 by Guest
tetradite
I was the same for a long time. From starting doing any modding at all to actually finishing a mod probably took me 2 years. 1 - YES. Once the smaller mod is finished you could always build it into something larger. Think of your "big idea" then think of a smaller starting quest just to introduce things. Finish the small quest and make it standalone, but make it so that it leaves the door open for your "big idea". You'll get the satisfaction of actually finishing something, AND you won't have "wasted" work because what you've finished already will contribute to your "big idea". In my case I started out building a simple player home, but I knew damn well that if it got finished I was then going to add a town and merchants etc around it. Also the home starts out free but I'm now working on making it quest-acquired. Break your big idea down into chunks if you can, hen even if the big idea doesn't get finished, you'll still have some completeness, and the satisfaction that brings. 2 - UP TO YOU. Personal thing I guess but I have much more motivation to get stuck in through the hard bits and finish something if it's "all mine", others might be more motivated by the "pressure" of not letting other people down. I just don't get the same satisfaction from a group effort. 3 - YES MOST DEFINITELY :D Don't pressure yourself!
gasti89
Imho big quests aren't different from small ones. You just have to "think small". Consider every quest in the big story as a "small quest mod" and proceed with little steps. Like 1 quest per modding session, or half a quest. Not rushing is the only secretfor not getting stressed imho.
Deleted800173User
Thanks guys! Its good to hear I'm not alone. I'm going to get started on a smaller quest then. I'll figure out away to use it in a larger quest later. :3 Off to modding I go! Edited June 19, 2012 by Guest

LargeStyle
Check out this video, it's helped and encouraged myself with modding struggles a lot. It's Todd Howards 2012 Key Notes speech, where he discusses Bethesdas own approach to working on the game. I think it's an excellent speech as it covers a hell of a lot of aspects, such as their game making / testing process, getting focus and balance right, only trying to achieve the achievable. The most appropriate Bethesda phrase was: We can do anything, we just can't do everything. Hope it helps and good luck with it all.
