Skyrim .esp and .esm Limit

So recently I thought I'd spice up my Skyrim installation with like a gazillion mods (no graphics/textures, they could only have been CPU intensive as far as I am concerned because most of them addressed non-graphical parts of the game) only to be horribly disappointed and reduce the number to 64/65 of the essential ones. Idiotic idea I know. Stability and all that at risk but I could have sworn I played oblivion with at least 150+ mods and that too on a computer that was like midrange near the 2002-2005 period in the year 2010.

So I wanted to know has anyone encountered a specific limit to the number of .esp/.esm based mods that can be installed at any particular time to Skyrim or is it just a hardware limitations issue?

But that's what I'm saying... I shouldn't have that little power in my machine. I at least expected to hit a 100 and by test checking it crashes for anything more than 79. I'm not even using anything huge just things that change the game to be more realistic, most of them. It doesn't make any sense that I can run oblivion on a computer that was probably a business computer that's like 7-8 years old with 150 mods (and still had very few stability issues) and now I can't even run anything more than 79 on a computer that's 2010 multimedia range and for which Skyrim is probably better optimized.
