dlwalsh
I am starting with a new installation of Skyrim LE. I watched the videos but am still confused as to what paths to use. My Skyrim in Steam is installed in D:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim Does Vortex automatically use this path? I see nowhere to add it if I must. I went to Settings, then clicked on the Mods tab.I entered D:\Games\Vortex\Skyrim which is a folder I set up for the mods. Is this correct?(D:\Games\Nexus Mod Manager\GameName is where all of my other NMM game files are downloaded to.) In the Download tab this path is currently displayed: C\Users\DWWDH\AppData\Roaming\Vortex\downloadsbut I know this is an incorrect path as I don't use Drive C for anything related to Skyrim or Nexus at all. However, I am not sure what I should replace it with. I do have a DWWDH folder on Drive D but there isno subfolder for AppData. Nor has it been used by any game, NMM, etc. for anything. Any help will be greatly appreciated as I am COMPLETELY non-techie! Grestorn
Yes, Vortex will detect your game directory automatically. You cannot set their path manually.
chanchan05
To be honest I'd advise you to reinstall Skyrim so that it's not in Program Files. That place is UAC protected, so a Windows Update or an AV update can break your modded game.
Grestorn
Not true. The STEAM game directory ("commonapps") is never write protected (but it's still a bad design choice by Steam to put it's game data in Program Files anyway!). And a Windows Update (even a feature update) will also never change anything in a custom program installation in Program Files . I have no idea where you got that idea from. I've had UAC trigger on me on the weirdest things after updates, even blocking game updates sometimes some years back (I think it was for NBA 2k), learning that the hard way after broken installations. After that, I decided to never install games on places like Program Files and just make a separate Games folder away from Program Files. Less of a headache in the long run. Grestorn
I agree that it's a good idea to use a custom path for Steam games outside of Program Files. Putting them there is just a bad idea. And I also think that at the beginning, Steam had some issues with access rights, that's why they changed that after a while. I might be mistaken though. But since Program Files is the default Steam storage location, there'd be much more problems if it would still be write protected, that's why I think they've changed that a while ago. But to be honest, I haven't tried that recently. I'd never put my games in Program Files anyway.
PedgeJ
Skyrim doesn't give me any UAC issues like The Witcher 3 does, but they are both in the same different drive in a new steam library. So I'm confused as what's right myself.
sopmac45
I have been using Windows for a very long time and I have not had any game broken due to any update screwing up with my game directory. All my games are in the common directory where Steam by default, is placing all games. I cannot concur.

Skyrim uses "Hardlink Deployment" where no such elevation is necessary.

But I guess that's why NMM is so outdated, for not being as secure and all.
