Best Fallout 76 Review! Get Excited!

The "can mod it in a private server" bit does sound enticing to me at least, but when beta players aren't happy with the game in en mass.. I'm not so sure about dropping the 60 bucks or whatever it will be.

Modding and private servers are only going to get added after a year. At launch there'll be none of that.

Plus, honestly, it will take a TITANIC amount of modding to fix the main problem, namely the lack of NPCs. We're talking about a total conversion times four, given the size of the playable area, and that kind of thing doesn't happen overnight. Or even in a year.

The thing is, what's lacking isn't hordes of mindless mobs attacking you. That part it's already got. So just a "more spawns" kind of mod isn't going to fix this one. Don't get me wrong, it did wonders for other Fallout titles, but 76 ain't gonna get fixed that way, because it already has plenty of enemies for you to farm as it is.

What it needs is quest NPCs, NPCs you can talk to, settlers, refugees, whatever. And those need a lot of work, especially if you want them voice-acted. Also, if you want them to actually give you quests and stuff, because otherwise it won't really do much for emotional involvement anyway.

Basically if you want to feel some emotional involvement over killing some raiders, or even it having any purpose, really, you need some victim NPCs that talk about it, give you quests, react in some way to your clearing the raiders, etc. Otherwise, just replacing some random ghoul mobs with some random raider mobs won't really do much.

I’m not putting a lot of faith into the whole private servers and modding thing until there is some definition of what level of modding is even going to be possible. Are we talking about a PS4 level of modding? Something more extensive? We don’t yet know anything on what “modding” means for this game, so I’m not getting my hopes up without more info other than “mods and private servers are coming someday.”

The devs are likely going to have hard time deciding what is “safe” to expose to modding for multiplayer (ie: potentially various scripting elements) and what isn’t. And I’m willing to bet real money that private servers will be a paid “premium” service on top of the $60 entry fee. Monthly subscriptions available in the Atom Store, perhaps? No thanks.

That being said, it only took one clever person with a Sharpie marker to defeat Sony’s vaunted “copy proof” CD DRM in the early 2000s.There is already an FO76 mod section here on Nexus with some replacer items. It’ll be fun to see how people hack the Gibson with this game.

I had a strong physiological response to this reference for some reason.

I watched another review and he reported some of the problems as being

1) You emerge from the Vault at the same time as a lot of other people which tends to break the idea that you are a Sole Survivor

2) Microphones are switched on by default so when he was creating his character he could hear some kid arguing with his mother

3) When you got to a location it had already been looted by other people.

I am not clear on how big a settlement you can build in this but seeing as that was the main fun for me I may just immediately trek across country, pick a spot and build the biggest base I can there, then explore properly.

Then ignore that "review" totally. The player is not a sole survivor (that's the Fallout 4 story). You are a member of a group of vault dwellers who have just had a massive "get out of the vault" party and you woke up late with a hangover ...

Edit: holdon DOF + FOV motion sickness, that hangover is built right into the display engine !
