Is there, or can we get an "purge everything" command?

Would really help after migrating from nmm to vortex to clean up loose texture or mesh files that aren't associated with any mod anymore.

Basically a delete all except (whitelist all vanilla fallout files and CC content).

"purge all mod files" , so to speak.

Thanks for hints.

If there is an overarching one-size-fits-all "purge all mod files" button, I'm unaware of it. However, some mod managers have the ability to purge what they installed.

Vortex has such a feature, but it removes only what it originally installed. However, If memory serves me correctly, NMM also has the ability to clean up after itself. Since you do not yet have any mods installed through Vortex, I would suggest using NMM for a purge. Then check your game data folder to see what's left. (Several forum posters have said NMM doesn't always remove everything it originally installed.) If you see stuff that appears not to belong in a pristine clean game data folder, then manually remove it. Then go to Steam (I'm assuming your games are on Steam) and verify the integrity of your game files. If you've inadvertently removed game files in your data purge, Steam will restore them for you.

The above advice applies only if you are starting a brand new game (which I assume you are). If you do this in the middle of a game, you risk the health and longevity of your game.

Sadly the assumptions where wrong and it's my bad for not specifying:

I am running on a windows 10 pc install with fo4 via steam.

I migrated (successfully, as it seemed) a ~270 mods (some were texture only) game to vortex.

I did install (even update) some mods afterwards.

I noticed something not uninstalling properly and leaving behind the files (I assume it is because the originals were 'not via deployment' installed as copies and not hardlinks? Or something along those lines).

So then I noticed a bunch of old files that "should not have been there anymore".. explaining a lot of weirdness.

Since I really don't know what the right files to leave behind in a "full purge" would be, I would basically be downloading all CC content and half the dlc stuff all over again? Oh well, maybe next playthrough or when the savegame corrupts.

Would still be a pretty neat little feature IF you do know the files to leave untouched. ;)

What I would do (and have done):

1) Purge mods in Vortex, close Vortex

2) delete all mods in NMM. Sop NMM and leave it stopped.

3) Delete Meshes, Textures, Scripts folders in your game directory and any leftover mods in Data

4) Open Steam, run Validate, close Steam

5) Open Vortex, click Deploy, and run your game.

At least it worked for me, and was very quick. Worked for my old saves; I lost nothing.

Sure beats starting a new game.

Not to worry (I hope), but there is a way to accomplish your purge, even though you have an up and running game with Vortex.

  1. Use Vortex to purge your game data files. (Don't worry - you're purging only the hardlinks that Vortex put there. You're not purging vanilla game files and the mods in your mod staging folder. Furthermore, the hardlinks are not gone forever. Re-deployment will restore them.)
  2. Remove mod detritus and anything else suspicious. However, be very careful with your Scripts folder. That folder always makes me nervous. You may want to do some forum searching for more help here.
  3. Use Steam to verify the integrity of your game files.
  4. Redeploy.

This procedure worked for me the one time I did it. Perhaps it will work for you.

Edit: rmm200 beat me to it! Anyway, his advice is excellent, and he's had more experience with this than I have.

Thanks for the hints. That's basically what I expected to have to do, but I will do it in-between games. Some of the mods that didn't uninstall left behind their esp's and everything, so I don't quite know if there's any "if you uninstall this during gameplay, kiss your savegame goodbye" one amongst those. ;)

You can take the safe route, and save those esps off somewhere.

Then, in Vortex, on the Saves page, click on the box that says fix missing mods.

Vortex will tell you which mods are missing. Re-download those and use Vortex to install them. It really is easy.

How about just getting this piece of garbage program to even work. What a piece of crap.

In the Vortex Discussion Forum there's a more appropriate thread where you can express these opinions. It's titled "Vortex is an unmitigated disaster." You'll find some simpatico posts there.
