Let's Get You Set Up

If I 'X" out the items in the "Let's Get You Set Up" dashlet is there a way to restore them?

Here I'm just guessing, so use at your own risk. Turn off the "Starter" button on the Interface tab in Settings. Turn it back on and shut down Vortex. Restart Vortex. If your dashlets are restored, then you may have to rearrange your dashboard to your liking.

Please let me know if this suggestion works.

Thanks for responding. It turns out that it's the "To Do" list option and not the "Starter" option. I tried toggling it on and off, restarting Vortex, toggling it off, restarting Vortex and every possible combination. All it does is turn off the dashlet and turn it back on but unfortunately none of the "X"ed out items reappear.

Oops! My apologies for directing you to the wrong button. If you did turn off the "Starter" button, I do hope you were able to recover all of your features. I'm disappointed that the "To Do List" button does not recover your deleted "Let's Get You Set Up" items. There is probably a way to do so, but I'm out of ideas.

Those items are really only intended to be your first steps into Vortex so there isn't a UI way to restore them.

If you really really want to reset them you have to close Vortex, open a Command Prompt (open start menu then start typing that)

in the prompt type

cd "c:\Program Files\Black Tree Gaming Ltd\Vortex"

(adjust if you used the custom installer)

and then

Vortex.exe --del settings.firststeps

or, if you had enabled shared mode in Settings -> Vortex, type

Vortex.exe --shared --del settings.firststeps

instead.

Then, start Vortex again

OK, that's good to know. Originally there was a button in the "To Do" list that was used to Integrate Fnis. At the time I wasn't going to do that because I was having so much trouble getting Fnis with redirect installed that I wasn't going to trust Vortex to integrate it. I have since gotten Fnis to run good through the dashboard and so was going to try to integrate it with that button. Unfortunately I deleted it. Is that option available somewhere else in the UI? Of course, I'm not really sure what integrating it with Vortex does anyway, but do I need to restore them all to get that one?

Is this what you're looking for?

Well, the "Let's get you started" button says "Integrate FNIS" so I don't know if it's the same thing or not. I think I'll just restore all the buttons like Tannin42 said and try experimenting again. Thank you very much for your help.

Follow up: I restored the "Let's get you started" button and used the "FNIS Integration" button. It does, in fact, toggle the "Run FNIS on Deployment Event" slider.

After trying "Integrate FNIS" again I remember why I disabled it. When it's integrated and I run FNIS, afterward Vortex says it's "Deploying" and "Updating FNIS" but it runs forever. I started it one evening, left it running, and checked it the next morning and it was still Deploying and Updating FNIS.

Hapless noob that I am, I did what Tannin42 said to do to try to get my startup squares back. Unfortunately, the del command under the command prompt seems to be a bit more potent than he thought and the del found and deleted my settings.firststeps from the place I asked it to deal with, the vortex folder and from another spot where it could be found on my computer, not just the one instance that I actually pointed it to. I suspect Vortex cannot replace it. So far the only functional problem with having a missing settings.firststeps is that the icon in the upper left of the dashboard next to my station name has disappeared, I think that's the button I would need for Vortex to check for updates to vortex. Also the missing startup squares on my dashboard are still missing. I can still play skyrim se with mods and Vortex seems to be working otherwise, but I am a bit nervous about what might not work in Vortex that I have not yet discovered. I also have zero notifications, and that seems ...odd.

Considering the amount of time it took me to set Vortex up in the first place because I know nothing, I think I'll just live with these issues as I really don't know how to reinstall vortex and what that might do to the conflict resolutions and rules that took many, many hours to figure out. If anyone can think of a simple yet clever work-around wherein I can get a fresh settings.firststeps, please let me know. I was wondering if maybe I could install a second instance of vortex on my computer, copy the executable and move it to the actually being used installation, but I fear that would be a one-way ticket to losing all kinds of other settings.
