I think you should put the latest images, hot files and new files where they were before. Then move the feed stuff over to the right. But honestly I still think the previous setup was best, and personally I don't care for this new design :/

I can't find the hot files button... (To view the latest hot files)

True that. Previously there was a link to a separate hot files page, which is where I found most of my top mods. Is it still there or was it removed?

edit:

Never mind. I can still go to it trough the menu bar.

As one of the loud and sharp critics of the new layout in it's first hours, I thought I should come back and say that I have seen lots of improvements since then.

Moving the Hot File thumbnails up with the preview pic, helps emphasize those mods, and brings the New Files group into visibility when the page first loads. It's like being above the fold in a newspaper.

With the feed tabs working, some format updates, and the new options in Preferences pointed out, it doesn't feel nearly so out of control. And not all broken now, either. Quite the opposite. It will take getting used to, but now I'm beginning to see how these additions can bring many benefits to a wide variety of users. (Even to gruff anti-social types.)

I haven't done a complete 180 in my opinion of the new layout, but I pride myself on being a practical person, and the more I find useful about it, the more it will pull me around.

That said, I hope you will take these 2 critiques about how this was executed in a constructive spirit, and add them to your own postmortem analysis, to make future efforts smoother for everyone.

1) The Warning

* I've gone back and re-read the site update warning in the site news at the end of June several times, and it really doesn't quite capture the magnitude of the change.

* Perhaps issue a site news update just before work like this starts, so we have that tidy bit of info about what we're seeing. That would go a long way to quell the immediate freak-out.

2) Better Notification of the new Preference Options. -- The earlier the better. The more prominent, the better. That "we've started" site news update mentioned above, would be an excellent place for this. So would that small News banner with rotating headlines.

Finally, there is one other very important thing I hope you keep in mind. (You probably do, but it's worth mentioning out loud, so to type.) A goodly part of the energy behind the complaints comes from a love for this site.

Thanks for everything, keep looking up,

Calen

I was going to post, and inform you this was the worst idea ever.

I was right then, but you've fixed it all. A great change. Thanks for making it awesome.
