Gyiul
Is there a way to convince Bethesda to release the source code for Skyrim (maybe even Oblivion and Morrowind) so we can create even better mods like adding new enemies, weapons, etc? Korodic
Lolnope.Because not even a space was needed to emphasize how ridiculous AV thought it was. And you do realize that... [A] People would possibly ruin other peoples games and Bethesda designed their game the way they wanted it to be. They don't want you turning around and making a better product entirely or a worse one making theirs look bad. They don't want to share all of their mom's cookies at lunchtime. AlexanderJVelicky
Because not even a space was needed to emphasize how ridiculous AV thought it was.Basically... There is a HUGE pile of reasons why they (And like 99.9999999% of game companies) don't release their source code. Licenses, and industry competition are major ones that come to mind. DavidD
Doom 3's source code was released. If any game they would release the source of Morrowind one would think, but it's very unlikely since in Doom's case id software (who released the game) created the engine and thus didn't have any problems with licencing except for a small piece of code which was removed. Their current engine is supposedly one of the best out there. Though Rage's epic failure would seem to say otherwise... And Bethesda's engine, while not exactly state of the art, is very fine tuned for this specific game type. So I would think they would like to keep that under wraps. Seeing as Doom 3 = Generic shooter. Nothing special. TES = Unique open world experience with a lot of things that no other game has. They would probably want to keep the code from their engine to themselves, and I don't blame them.
flobalob
Bethesda couldn't release the source code for the game engine even if they wanted to as it doesn't belong to them.Skyrim/New Vegas, FO3 & Oblivion run on various versions of the Gamebryo engine, Morrowind ran on it's predesesor NetImmerse. All of wich is owned by Gamebase USA LLC Edited July 8, 2012 by flobalob

AlexanderJVelicky
Actually, Skyrim's engine was written by Bethesda specifically to suit their needs. O_____oBut people were saying things like 'If anything they would release Morrowind' which Beth can't because they don't own the rights to it.Wrong. The engine was edited to suit their needs. The Gamebryo engine is not owned by Bethesda, and releasing the source code would kill Bethesda in a second.Again, Gamebryo isn't an engine, it's a middleware. With Skyrim (Not the other ones, ONLY Skyrim) they've copyrighted their own engine, the Creation Engine, which they now own full rights too. So legally as far as who owns the engine goes, they could release it, but theres still like 3000 reasons why they wouldn't, and shouldn't.
